The Sahara Desert was not always a desert. Thousands of years ago, parts of it were covered by grasslands, lakes, and rivers. Ancient rock art found across the region shows people hunted animals such as giraffes and hippos there when the climate was much wetter.

In 1875, Charles Darwin suspected two Saxifraga species, S. rotundifolia and S. umbrosa, might be carnivorous after seeing sticky hairs trap insects. Scientists could not prove it then. In 2026,on the 4th of August, researchers confirmed a different species, S. candelabrum, is carnivorous. It grows on nutrient-poor mountain rocks in China, where sticky hairs trap insects and digestive enzymes break them down, allowing the plant to absorb nutrients. πΏ

In 2007, the internet community r/place was created by Reddit as a massive collaborative digital canvas. Millions of users could place just one colored pixel every few minutes, forcing strangers to cooperate to create detailed artwork, national flags, memes, and tributes. The experiment became one of the largest examples of online collaboration, showing how thousands of independent users could organize without central leadership.

The βhusband stitchβ is a term for an extra stitch sometimes placed during the repair of a vaginal tear or episiotomy after childbirth.
The stitch was supposedly intended to make the vaginal opening tighter for the husbandβs sexual pleasure.
The term can be traced back to at least 1885, when a Texas doctor described adding an extra stitch at a husbandβs request.
The practice is not medically necessary and can cause pain, scarring, and other complications.

Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt, died in Alexandria in 30 BC at age 39, shortly after Mark Antony died by suicide. Her death is traditionally dated to August 12, 30 BC, although some historians argue for August 10. Ancient writers disagreed about how she died: Plutarch described a possible snakebite, while other accounts suggested poison delivered by an object or applied as an ointment. No surviving evidence proves that an asp killed her. Her death ended the Ptolemaic dynasty and brought Egypt under Roman rule.

Ancient Romans used a type of concrete that could repair its own cracks.
Researchers found that Roman concrete contains small pieces of lime. When water reaches a crack, the lime can react with it and form new minerals that seal the damaged area.
Some Roman concrete structures built nearly 2,000 years ago are still standing today, including structures that have been exposed to seawater. ποΈ

The Amazon rainforest creates its own weather system. Trees release huge amounts of water vapour through a process called transpiration. This moisture forms clouds and transports rainfall across the region, with the forest acting like a giant natural water pump.

Medieval Europeans sometimes believed that mandrake roots could scream when pulled from the ground. The plant's roots can resemble a human figure, which helped create strange legends around them. According to folklore, the mandrake's cry was deadly, so people supposedly used dogs to pull the plant from the soil while keeping their distance. Mandrakes were also associated with magic, fertility, and medicine in medieval European traditions.

The Scottish village of Gretna Green became famous for βrunaway marriagesβ after Englandβs 1753 Marriage Act required parental consent for couples under 21. Scotland had different rules: until 1929, girls could legally marry from age 12 and boys from age 14, without parental consent. Many couples crossed the border to marry, and Gretna Green became especially famous for these unions. βAnvil priestsβ became associated with the village, where marriages were performed over the blacksmithβs anvil.

A tiny creature called the tardigrade can survive conditions that would kill most life. It can enter a dormant state called cryptobiosis, where its metabolism almost stops. Tardigrades have survived extreme cold, dehydration, radiation, and exposure to the vacuum of space in experiments.

Earth is still in an ice age called the Quaternary Ice Age. We are currently in a warmer interglacial period. Scientists estimate the next glacial period could begin naturally in about 50,000β125,000 years. Human-caused COβ emissions can delay this transition.
