Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt, died in Alexandria in 30 BC at age 39, shortly after Mark Antony died by suicide. Her death is traditionally dated to August 12, 30 BC, although some historians argue for August 10. Ancient writers disagreed about how she died: Plutarch described a possible snakebite, while other accounts suggested poison delivered by an object or applied as an ointment. No surviving evidence proves that an asp killed her. Her death ended the Ptolemaic dynasty and brought Egypt under Roman rule.

Ancient Romans used a type of concrete that could repair its own cracks.

Researchers found that Roman concrete contains small pieces of lime. When water reaches a crack, the lime can react with it and form new minerals that seal the damaged area.

Some Roman concrete structures built nearly 2,000 years ago are still standing today, including structures that have been exposed to seawater. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

The Amazon rainforest creates its own weather system. Trees release huge amounts of water vapour through a process called transpiration. This moisture forms clouds and transports rainfall across the region, with the forest acting like a giant natural water pump.

The word "radio" comes from the Latin word "radius," which means "ray" or "beam." It originally referred to the transmission of signals by electromagnetic waves, like rays spreading out from a source. Over time, "radio" became the term for the technology and devices that send and receive these signals.

Medieval Europeans sometimes believed that mandrake roots could scream when pulled from the ground. The plant's roots can resemble a human figure, which helped create strange legends around them. According to folklore, the mandrake's cry was deadly, so people supposedly used dogs to pull the plant from the soil while keeping their distance. Mandrakes were also associated with magic, fertility, and medicine in medieval European traditions.

The Scottish village of Gretna Green became famous for โ€œrunaway marriagesโ€ after Englandโ€™s 1753 Marriage Act required parental consent for couples under 21. Scotland had different rules: until 1929, girls could legally marry from age 12 and boys from age 14, without parental consent. Many couples crossed the border to marry, and Gretna Green became especially famous for these unions. โ€œAnvil priestsโ€ became associated with the village, where marriages were performed over the blacksmithโ€™s anvil.

A tiny creature called the tardigrade can survive conditions that would kill most life. It can enter a dormant state called cryptobiosis, where its metabolism almost stops. Tardigrades have survived extreme cold, dehydration, radiation, and exposure to the vacuum of space in experiments.

Earth is still in an ice age called the Quaternary Ice Age. We are currently in a warmer interglacial period. Scientists estimate the next glacial period could begin naturally in about 50,000โ€“125,000 years. Human-caused COโ‚‚ emissions can delay this transition.

Conjoined twins are identical twins who are physically connected at birth.

They develop when a single fertilized egg begins to divide into two embryos, but the separation is incomplete.

The twins may be connected at the chest, abdomen, pelvis, back, or skull, and some may share organs or blood vessels.

Their anatomy can be examined using medical imaging, and separation surgery is possible in some cases, depending on the organs and blood vessels they share.

โ€œSiamese twinsโ€ is an older term for conjoined twins and is not the preferred medical term today.

Myth: Glass flows over time, making old windows thicker at the bottom.
Fact: Glass is an amorphous solid, meaning its atoms are arranged randomly, not in a pattern like crystals. It stays solid at all normal temperatures and only softens above 600ยฐC (1112ยฐF). Old windows are thicker at the bottom because of how they were made, not because glass moves.

Cats can hear ultrasonic sounds that humans cannot hear. Their hearing can reach about 64โ€“65 kHz, compared with about 45 kHz for dogs and 23 kHz for humans. Cats can therefore hear some high-frequency sounds that are beyond human hearing.
Like the opening of a can of tuna..

They also know very well when you call them, they often simply choose to ignore you.
