The first mass-produced cotton swab (Q-tip) was developed in 1923 by Leo Gerstenzang after seeing his wife’s homemade cotton-and-toothpick swabs fail while she used it for their babies eyes and ears.

Unable to find a safer alternative, he invented it.

Originally named "Baby Gays" for infant use, it was later renamed "Q-tips" (Q for quality).

While commonly used to clean ear canals, this contradicts manufacturer advice.

Inserting Q-tips into ears can push wax deeper, irritate skin, or damage the eardrum.

Ears typically clean themselves naturally; consult a doctor if symptoms arise.

The Ford Nucleon, a 1957 concept car, envisioned a future nuclear-powered vehicle.

It featured a small rear-mounted reactor driving a steam engine via uranium fission, similar to nuclear submarines, without an internal combustion engine.

Only a scale model was produced.

The design was a "futuristic fancy" and "advanced notion" rather than a serious engineering proposal, anticipating future miniaturization of reactors and radiation shielding.

Dziady (lit. 'grandfathers, forefathers) refers to ancestor spirits and pre-Christian rites in East and West Slavic folklore centered on the "communion of the living with the dead."

These rituals aimed to secure the favor of deceased ancestors, viewed as fertility caretakers.

The term dziady is primarily used in Belarus, Poland, Polesia, Russia, Ukraine, and border areas.

Similar practices, known by other names such as pomynky, przewody, radonitsa, and zaduszki, exist(ed) among Slavs, Balts, and other global cultures.

In Slavic tradition, the feast of the deceased was celebrated at least twice yearly but this depends on the local traditions: Spring dziady around May 1–2, and Autumn dziady on the night of October 31 to November 1 (All Saints Day), preparing for the autumn day of the dead around November 2.

β€œSioux” is a name Europeans used for the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota. It comes from an Ojibwe word meaning β€œenemy people,” used in maps, treaties, and records. These are Native American groups in the Great Plains. They are part of the Oceti Sakowin, or Seven Council Fires, and speak related Siouan languages.

Lakota means β€œallies”.
Dakota means β€œfriends”.
Nakota means β€œthe allies of allies.”

The Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, was a carnivorous marsupial native to Australia and Tasmania that became extinct in the 20th century, with the last known individual dying in captivity in 1936.

Although there are claims that some still survived somewhere, this has not been proven.

HD 189733 b (see picture) appears bright blue and friendly to life like earth, but is lethal.

Winds reach 5,400 mph (2 km/s), 7 times the speed of sound, spiraling potential travelers around the planet.

Rain most likely consists of sideways glass.

The blue color results from a hazy, blow-torched atmosphere with high clouds laced with silicate particles, not from an ocean, at least not one made of liquid water as temperatures reach between 1,192Β±9 K (919 Β°C; 1,686 Β°F) and
1,490Β±68 K (1,220 Β°C; 2,220 Β°F)

In 1985, a domain name was registered that would help establish how people navigate the internet today.

Symbolics.com, registered on March 15, 1985, became the first publicly registered .com domain name.

At the time, the internet was still largely used by researchers, universities, and government institutions rather than the general public.

Today, ".com" is one of the most widely recognized domain extensions, used by businesses, organizations, and individuals around the world.

The next time Earth is closest to the Sun will be on January 3, 2027 at 02:33 UTC (Perihelion)

July 5, 2027 at 05:06 UTC will be when earth is furthest from the sun. (Aphelion)

Although this sounds weird for people who experience winter during this time;

The seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis, not by the distance to the sun.

Sugar does not necessarily make children hyperactive.

Studies have found no consistent scientific evidence that sugar directly causes hyperactivity in children.

Researchers believe excitement, environment, and expectations often explain the behavior instead.

In some experiments, parents who thought their children had consumed sugar rated them as more hyperactive even when no sugar was given.

The myth became popular because sugary foods are often eaten during parties, holidays, and exciting events where children are already energetic.

Neon tetra fish form orderly queues when escaping through narrow spaces to avoid bumping into each other.

Scientists observed groups of these fish passing calmly through small openings without clogging.

This behavior helps them evacuate efficiently, unlike humans and sheep who often push and cause jams in emergencies.

The study may help improve traffic flow and robot swarm designs.

Goldfish do not have a three-second memory.

They can remember information for weeks or even months.

Goldfish can learn routines, recognize feeding times, and even respond to colors and sounds.

Some experiments have trained goldfish to complete simple tasks and navigate mazes.

The myth likely became popular because goldfish are small and seen as simple pets, but scientists say their memory is far better than most people think. (And better than some people πŸ˜‰)

Alkaline hydrolysis, also called water cremation, biocremation, resomation, flameless cremation, or aquamation, breaks down the body using water, lye, and heat. Bones are dried and crushed into ashes. The liquid is sterile, treated in wastewater systems, and eventually enters rivers, lakes, or irrigation, returning nutrients to the environment. It uses less energy than flame cremation and produces no air pollution.

The origins of Halloween can be traced back more than 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated around October 31.

The Celts believed that the boundary between the living and the dead became thinner during this time.

People lit large bonfires and wore costumes to protect themselves from wandering spirits.

Over centuries, Samhain traditions mixed with Christian observances, eventually contributing to the Halloween celebrations we know today.

In the 19th century, parts of New England (Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut, southern Massachusetts, and Vermont) believed tuberculosis, then called β€œconsumption,” was caused by vampires β€” the dead draining life from the living.

Families sometimes dug up bodies of deceased relatives, burned their organs, or mixed ashes with water to use as remedies, hoping to stop the disease from spreading to the living.

In ancient Athens, some elite men formed socially recognized relationships with adolescent boys called eromenos.

The adult, erastes, acted as a mentor, teaching the boy skills and introducing him to society.

These relationships were accepted at the time and had strict social rules:

The boy had to be young and not fully grown.

Once he reached adulthood, remaining in that role was considered inappropriate.
