sometimes i sit and wonder how life can change so quickly that you don’t even realise you’ve left your happiest days behind.
there was a time when even the smallest happiness in my life had only one destination. my dad.
a star in my notebook, a “well done” from a teacher, even the tiniest achievement felt incomplete until i heard his voice. i still remember being in 4th grade, holding two medals. silver in maths olympiad and gold in science. i was so happy that i couldn’t even walk properly. i was almost dancing on my way home. my grandfather kept asking me what happened? why i was glowing like that, and i just smiled and said, “i’ll tell at home”
but home wasn’t the first place i wanted to reach. he was.
the moment i stepped inside, i grabbed my mom’s phone while she was scolding me for touching it right after coming back. i didn’t care. i just wanted to call him. when he answered and i told him about the medals, his happiness felt bigger than mine. that evening, he came home early with all my favourite snacks.. not because it was necessary but because my joy was enough reason..
people used to say he was spoiling me.
maybe he was.
but he was also building a world around me where i felt loved without conditions.
i didn’t do much work as a child. i played, i watched tv, ran around with friends and escaped chores whenever i could. my mumma and dadi would complain every night. telling him how irresponsible i was. and he would simply say “i don’t like my daughter doing work”
the only thing i did with full dedication was wait for him.
every evening, i would run to the door when he came home. i’d ask about his day like it was the most important story in the world, bring him water proudly and sit next to him talking non-stop. i told him everything.. every fight, every joke, every silly detail.. and he told me everything too. i even knew about the people in his office, his business tensions, small incidents from his day. i used to ask him if anyone troubled him, and he would always say, “no everyone is nice”
i have never seen my dad speak badly about anyone. no matter what people did. he stayed gentle.
i was the opposite. i was loud, emotional and ready to fight the world.. especially for him. if someone spoke to him disrespectfully, it felt like they hurt me. once, my school called him because i fought with a classmate. the teachers probably thought he would scold me. they handed me the phone like i was about to be punished.
but he was like “should we go out for dinner tonight?”
that was my dad.
that was my childhood.
i was fearless because, somewhere deep inside, i knew i had someone who would always stand behind me. someone who would choose me, even when i was wrong.
and then life moved forward, the way it always does.
now he is far away from me, and sometimes i look at myself and don’t recognise the girl i used to be.
i’ve become quieter. calmer. i think more before speaking. i keep things to myself. i don’t run to share every small happiness or sadness anymore.
and maybe it’s because the person who made the world feel safe is no longer right there beside me.
when you grow up wrapped in someone’s unconditional love, you shine without fear. when that presence becomes distant, you don’t just miss the person.. you miss the version of yourself that existed because of them.
sometimes i don’t just miss my dad.
i miss being his little girl.
i miss the way i used to talk without thinking, laugh without holding back, fight without fear because o knew, no matter what happened, he was there.
now i am learning to be strong on my own. to stay quiet. to handle things. to grow up in ways i never asked for.
but no matter how much i change, no matter how “normal” or mature i become, there will always be a part of me frozen in those evenings.. running to the door, waiting for him to come home, holding stories in my hands like medals, just to hear him say, “Tell me everything.”
because a father’s love doesn’t really leave. it just becomes a quiet ache… and a quiet strength… that you carry for the rest of your life.
