What is a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) ?
Use of Metric / Imperial Units
Basic Working Principle – Water Cooled Chiller
A water-cooled chiller removes heat from a building by using chilled water as the heat transfer medium.
Heat absorbed from rooms is transferred to the refrigerant inside the chiller, and finally rejected to the atmosphere through a cooling tower.
Main Components & Functions
1️⃣ Compressor
Compresses low-pressure refrigerant vapor
Raises pressure and temperature
Circulates refrigerant through the system
2️⃣ Evaporator
Refrigerant absorbs heat from chilled water
Chilled water temperature drops
Cooled water is sent to AHU & FCU
3️⃣ Condenser (Water-Cooled)
Hot refrigerant releases heat to condenser water
Refrigerant changes from vapor to liquid
4️⃣ Expansion Valve
Reduces refrigerant pressure
Prepares refrigerant for heat absorption in evaporator
5️⃣ Refrigerant
The working fluid that absorbs and rejects heat inside the chiller
Water Circulation Systems
6️⃣ Chilled Water Pump
Circulates chilled water between chiller ↔ AHU/FCU
7️⃣ AHU (Air Handling Unit)
Used for large spaces
Cools and supplies conditioned air
8️⃣ FCU (Fan Coil Unit)
Used for individual rooms
Provides localized cooling
9️⃣ Expansion Tank
Maintains system pressure
Absorbs water expansion due to temperature change
Heat Rejection System
🔟 Condenser Water Pump
Circulates hot condenser water to the cooling tower
1️⃣1️⃣ Cooling Tower
Rejects heat to atmosphere by evaporation
Cooled water returns to condenser
1️⃣2️⃣ Make-Up Water Line
Replaces water lost due to evaporation and drift
1️⃣3️⃣ Drift Eliminator
Prevents water droplets from escaping the cooling tower
Simple Heat Flow Summary 🔄
