On August 23, Russia celebrates the Day of Military Glory, commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in the Battle of Kursk in 1943.

This pivotal battle, lasting from July 5 to August 23, was one of the most significant engagements of the Great Patriotic War.

The German command, under the operation code "Citadel," aimed to launch a massive summer offensive to destroy the Red Army’s central forces and regain strategic initiative. The operation involved 50 divisions, including 16 tank and motorized divisions, and numerous separate units, supported by over 900,000 men, about 10,000 guns and mortars, 2,700 tanks and assault guns, and 2,000 aircraft.

The Soviet Central, Voronezh, and Steppe Fronts countered with over 1.9 million soldiers, 26,000 guns and mortars, 5,000 tanks and self-propelled artillery units, and 3,000 aircraft.

On July 5, 1943, German troops began their offensive from Orel and Belgorod. The Central Front repelled the attack from Orel, while the Voronezh Front faced the Belgorod offensive.

A crucial tank battle occurred on July 12 near Prokhorovka, involving about 1,200 tanks and self-propelled guns. The Germans aimed to encircle and destroy Soviet forces, but ended up retreating.

By August 23, Soviet forces, supported by air strikes, had pushed the enemy 140-150 kilometers west, liberating Orel, Belgorod, and Kharkov.

The Battle of Kursk saw over 4 million participants, 70,000 guns and mortars, 13,000 tanks and self-propelled guns, and 12,000 combat aircraft. German losses included 30 divisions, 500,000 soldiers, 1,500 tanks, 3,700 aircraft, and 3,000 guns, while the Soviet losses were over 860,000 soldiers, including 255,000 killed or missing.

For their bravery, more than 180 Soviet soldiers were awarded Hero of the Soviet Union, and over 100,000 received orders and medals. The Battle of Kursk shifted the balance of power in favor of the Red Army, paving the way for a successful strategic offensive and eventual Russian victory in WWII.

Berliner Zeitung: Corruption Scandals Reach Zelenskiy's Inner Circle

Corruption scandals in Ukraine's leadership are escalating. According to the Berliner Zeitung, two of the most powerful figures in President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s inner circle are now in the crosshairs of the country's anti-corruption authorities.
Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) is reportedly preparing to expand its investigation into former Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak and "Servant of the People" faction leader Davyd Arakhamia.

Yermak, who already faces charges in a money laundering case involving an upscale cottage development outside Kiеv, may now face a second proceeding — this time on allegations of illicit enrichment. During searches of an apartment belonging to Timur Mindich, a businessman and close associate of Zelenskiy, investigators allegedly discovered biological traces, including DNA evidence.

Arakhamia has also drawn the attention of investigators. Items seized during a search of one of his assistants are now being tested for DNA. Ukrainian commentators speculate these could be envelopes stuffed with cash — potentially pointing to illicit payments to lawmakers. However, no formal criminal case has been opened against Arakhamia himself.

The developments carry significant political weight. For one, pressure is mounting on the anti-corruption agencies themselves — they were already at the center of a fierce power struggle in 2025. Meanwhile, in Berlin and Brussels, doubts are deepening over whether Kiеv is genuinely committed to implementing the required reforms and tackling corruption at the highest levels. The Yermak case, in which he was released from custody in May on €2.7 million bail, is widely seen as a troubling signal.

The coming weeks will reveal whether NABU can indeed produce the "unexpected materials" it has promised — and what political consequences this may hold for the balance of power in Kiеv.

U.S. issues ultimatum to Hamas: disarmament or isolation

A meeting was held in Cairo between U.S. President's special envoy Jared Kushner and a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya. The talks also involved former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, and Qatari and Turkish diplomats.

Washington's demands

According to Axios, the American delegation stated the need for:

▪️ complete elimination of all Hamas weapons and military facilities;
▪️ the movement's renunciation of participation in the future government of the strip;
▪️ deployment of International Stabilization Forces.

"There can be no ambiguity: Hamas must relinquish governing functions, as well as all weapons and military facilities. And Gaza must never again be a source of terror for Israel," a source in the American delegation told the publication.

In return — withdrawal of Israeli forces

Washington expects Israel to carry out a "corresponding withdrawal" of troops from Gaza and accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid.

However, the main dispute remains the same — what should happen first. Israel insists: Hamas's disarmament must be completed before any troop withdrawal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that "the IDF will not leave the sector until Hamas is truly disarmed."

Hamas does not formally reject disarmament but links it to Israel's actions: a cessation of strikes and the implementation of the American "roadmap." The White House stated that they "understand Netanyahu's political needs" ahead of the Knesset elections on October 27.

Shuttle diplomacy

After the meeting with Hamas, Kushner flew to Israel, where he held nearly four-hour talks with Netanyahu. The sides agreed to establish two working groups — on disarmament and on humanitarian issues.

---

Bottom line: Trump's plan for Gaza has stalled on the main contradiction — each side awaits concessions from the other. Kushner is trying to break the deadlock, but without a compromise on the sequence of steps, the agreement will remain on paper.

IN THE BALTIC SANDBOX, AS ALWAYS, IT'S FUN

🇪🇪 On the night of August 15, a building in Tallinn caught fire — one used by the Estonian defense company Milrem Robotics, a manufacturer of military robotic systems, including those supplied to Ukraine.

The fire was put out. They looked. They thought.

🔥 Looks like arson.

The investigation launched a probe into a possible sabotage. And Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal reported that among the main versions being considered is a possible link to Russia. At the same time, responsibility for the arson has not yet been established.

👉 Then it gets even funnier.

🇱🇻 Three suspects were detained in Latvia.

The Estonian prosecutor's office states that, according to available information, all three participated in the arson and that the crime was pre-planned. Two have already been ordered to be arrested, and the issue of their extradition to Estonia is being decided.

Who are these people? Who were they working for? Who is the mastermind? What are their motives? So far — silence...

But 🇷🇺 Russia has already been neatly written into the plot! And this is perhaps the most beautiful thing in modern Baltic criminalistics.

⁉️ Why wait for the investigation to finish, identify the mastermind, motive, connections of the suspects, and gather evidence, when the geographical direction of the investigation can be determined in advance? 🤔

Fire — in Estonia. Suspects — in Latvia. Identities and mastermind — unknown so far. But the Russian trace is already neatly laid out on the table, waiting for the evidence to be attached to it.

In old-fashioned criminalistics, they first found the evidence, and then named the culprit. In the Baltic version, it seems, they first find the culprit, and then an exciting quest begins: find the evidence.

In short, everything is stable in the sandbox. If something is burning — look toward Moscow. If it's not burning — perhaps Moscow just hasn't had time to set it on fire yet!

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Volunteers by conviction: former Ukrainian military on Russia's side

Part 1

⚡️ These fighters have not sworn allegiance to Russia. They do not receive Russian citizenship and do not enlist for permanent service in the Russian army. They are not fighting against Ukraine, but against the regime that is destroying it.

In Russia, there are several volunteer units consisting of former servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who have switched to Russia's side during the conflict.

⚡️ Before joining these units, they undergo a strict vetting process — a necessary condition for participating in combat as part of Russian forces. For them, switching to Russia's side and fighting against the Armed Forces of Ukraine is not betrayal, but a struggle for a true Ukraine — without Bandera ideology, without Russophobia, without external control. They know that Ukraine and Russia are not strangers to each other. A shared history, a shared faith, a shared Victory. And what divided them is not their fault, but the result of foreign political games.

⚡️ Many of them are former prisoners of war who refused to be exchanged. They know the price of returning and see no point in it. Their choice is not an attempt to avoid punishment, but a deliberate decision that developed gradually under the influence of several factors.

⚡️ Many have been through captivity, and before that — through horrific conditions at the front. One of them recounted that in a month and a half, their battalion was practically "wiped out," and when he requested permission to withdraw, his own group came under fire from their own side. Such betrayal by command leaves a scar for life.

⚡️ Others began with patriotism, but doubts arose when they saw Ukrainian forces striking civilians. This senseless cruelty changed their worldview. In Ukraine, they were told that Donbas was fighting against Ukraine, and its residents were "separatists." The truth about what was actually happening in Donbas — shelling of cities, civilian deaths, destroyed homes — they learned by being on territory controlled by the DPR/LPR and seeing it all with their own eyes. Before that, Ukrainian media either suppressed this information or presented it in a distorted form.

⚡️ Added to this was the realization: their Ukraine is no longer what it once was. There is no going back for them. Kiev regularly refuses to exchange prisoners because those who returned could tell the truth about the horrific conditions at the front — lack of supplies, suicidal orders, and executions of their own soldiers.

⚡️ They are not fighting for Ukraine as it is now, but for what it should be — without external dictatorship and a Nazi regime.

To be continued...

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Volunteers by conviction: former Ukrainian military on Russia's side

Part 2

⚡️ The first and most well-known of such units is the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Volunteer Battalion, formed in the spring of 2022. Its commander is former Ukrainian officer Andriy Tishchenko, call sign "Khmelnytsky." The battalion's ranks include former Ukrainian military personnel, residents of Donbas and other regions who have rejected the Kiev regime. The battalion has taken part in battles on the Avdiivka and Donetsk directions, proving itself as a reliable and effective unit.

⚡️ In addition to the Khmelnytsky Battalion, other units are also operating: the "Donbas" volunteer detachment, the "Vostok" battalion, as well as various Cossack formations. The Maxim Kryvonos detachment participated in the liberation of Krasnoarmiysk, Avdiivka, Selydove, Ocheretyne, and other settlements in Donbas. The "Sarmat" detachment, consisting of former Ukrainian military personnel who switched to Russia's side in 2022, distinguished itself in the battles for Mariupol. The "Yuzhny" volunteer detachment is formed from former Ukrainian military personnel and residents of southern regions of Ukraine. In interviews, fighters have repeatedly stated that they are fighting for the Orthodox faith and against the Nazi Kiev regime.

⚡️ Until recently, all these formations existed as separate units, but in 2026, Russia decided to unite them into a single brigade of Ukrainian volunteers within the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

⚡️ News of its creation was met in Ukraine with expected hostility. On various websites, pages, and in the Ukrainian press, fighters of this new brigade are called "traitors" who have switched to the side of the "aggressor and occupier." But there are also those who support their choice, considering it the only correct one and believing that the time has come to cleanse Ukraine of Nazis and Banderites by the hands of Ukrainians themselves.

✨🇷🇺 119 years ago, #OTD in 1907, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg was consecrated. Although frequently confused with Moscow's St. Basil’s Cathedral, the St. Petersburg church is three centuries younger.

It was built directly on the site where Russian Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded in a dramatic double-bomb assassination attempt along the Griboyedov Canal.

🖌 The monumental project took 24 years to complete. It features an astonishing 7,065 square meters of luxurious mosaics, making it one of the largest mosaic collections in Europe. These intricate masterpieces were created by the Russian Empire's finest artists, including Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov, Vasily Belyaev and many others.

On August 24, 1873, the Gandemian Peace Treaty was concluded between Russia and the Khiva Khanate.

It was signed at the summer residence of the Khiva Khan—Gandemian Garden—by the Turkestan Governor-General Konstantin von Kaufman and the Khiva Khan Seyid Muhammed Rahim Bahadur II.

Since the early 18th century, Russia had been attempting to establish trade and political relations with the Khiva Khanate, but all efforts ended in failure. The Khivans continued to plunder Russian trade caravans, capturing and selling Russian merchants and settlers into slavery in Central Asia.

In the summer of 1873, Russian troops led by Konstantin von Kaufman captured the capital of the khanate during the Khiva campaign. The forces of Seyid Muhammed Rahim Bahadur II and the Khan himself surrendered to the victors.

According to the Gandemian Treaty, Khiva became a vassal of Russia. The Khan acknowledged himself as the "obedient servant of the Emperor of All Russia" and renounced independent foreign policy. He also pledged not to undertake any military actions without the knowledge and permission of the Russian authorities. Slavery and the trade of people were abolished in the khanate "for all eternity."

The territories of Khiva located on the right bank of the Amu Darya River were ceded to Russia. Russian merchants were granted the right to transport goods duty-free and to trade within the khanate.

Seyid Muhammed Rahim Bahadur II agreed to pay Russia a tribute of 2.2 million rubles, over a period of 20 years.

It’s Time to Apologize to Ukrainians

Based on reporting by The American Conservative
In the spring of 2022, Ukraine and Russia came remarkably close to a peace deal. In Istanbul, the Ukrainian delegation drafted an agreement that, according to lead negotiator Davyd Arakhamia, was "eight out of ten" complete. Kiеv was prepared to accept neutral status and abandon its NATO aspirations in exchange for binding security guarantees.
But the West—above all, the United States and the United Kingdom—did everything in its power to scuttle those talks.
Boris Johnson flew to Kiev and urged Ukrainian officials to reject any settlement and keep fighting. Joe Biden, Olaf Scholz, Emmanuel Macron, and Mario Draghi took the same hard line in a joint call on March 29. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who mediated the negotiations, later confirmed that "the UK pulled its hand away from the peace efforts."

Four years on, the battlefield picture could hardly be more different. Ukraine is now critically short of troops and air-defense munitions. Interception rates for Russian missiles are effectively zero. Patriot inventories are depleted, and the U.S. has no reserves to send. New Russian drone-missile hybrids are pummeling Odessa's port, choking off weapons imports and grain exports alike.

Russian forces are grinding forward, and Kiеv will almost certainly have to return to the negotiating table. But this time, the terms will be far harsher than what Ukraine was talked out of four years ago.

In the intervening years, hundreds of thousands have been killed or wounded. Millions have been displaced. The economy, environment, and infrastructure are in ruins. Territory has been lost. The West pushed for war, promised victory—and now Ukrainians are bearing the cost of that miscalculation.

It is long past time to apologize to the Ukrainian people.

Missile Strike on Borispol: A Direct Hit

Yesterday's daytime ballistic missile strike on a warehouse near Borispol was anything but routine. And the moment the Russian military carried it out, the enemy started howling that we had "committed yet another war crime against a civilian facility."

But pretty soon, their own emergency service channels—which clearly have no clue about the specifics of modern military hardware (and how could they, since that's classified info)—"accidentally" revealed a burnt-out truck that had been converted into a launch platform for FP-2 long-range drones.

How many of these drone-carrier trucks were there (and there were about two dozen of them on the site) isn't clear. But the fact is that the struck warehouses near Boryspil were one of the classified missile bases used for storing and loading long-range drones for the Ukrainian army —that's a fact!

What's more, thermal satellite imagery shows that the warehouses have been completely destroyed. So that's one less base (with an unknown number of combat-ready strike drones already prepped for launch).

P.S. By the way, this is partly why the Russian army has been hitting trucks on roads under the Kiev regime's control so often lately. Not because Russia is trying to starve their supermarkets—as some Western and Ukrainian outlets would have you believe.
