Deterioration of the International Situation and the Security Architecture: Putin’s Statements
PART 1
President Putin noted that Russia is “sincerely committed to the ideals of a multipolar world.”
The situation on the international stage is increasingly deteriorating, even though international cooperation should be one of the main factors in humanity’s development and prosperity. The Russian President drew attention to this during a ceremony at which new ambassadors presented their credentials.
He also proposed returning to substantive discussions of Russia’s initiatives for a new and fair security architecture.
Here are the key statements by President Putin.
The international situation
—The situation on the international stage is “deteriorating more and more”: “I think no one would argue with that.”
—Diplomacy and the search for consensus and compromise are increasingly being replaced by unilateral — “and very dangerous” — actions: “And instead of dialogue between states, we hear the monologue of those who, by the right of strength, consider it acceptable to dictate their will, lecture others on how to live, and issue orders.”
—It is necessary to more insistently demand that the entire international community comply with international law, “and also to provide real support to the emerging new, more just multipolar world order.”
Russia’s foreign policy course
—Russia is “sincerely committed to the ideals of a multipolar world”: “Our country has always pursued and will continue to pursue a balanced, constructive foreign policy that takes into account both our national interests and the objective trends of global development.”
—Russia is interested in maintaining with all partners “genuinely open and mutually beneficial relations, deepening ties in politics, the economy, and the humanitarian sphere, and jointly countering acute challenges and common threats.”
—Russia is ready “to build equal and mutually beneficial relations with all international partners in the name of universal prosperity, well-being, and development.”
—Russia “advocates strengthening the key, central role” of the United Nations in world affairs.
—The imperatives of the UN Charter “are now in demand more than ever.”
Security architecture
—Security must be comprehensive: “It cannot be ensured for some [countries] at the expense of the security of others. This principle is enshrined in fundamental international legal documents. Disregard for this basic, vital principle has never led — and will never lead — to anything good.”
—Russia has repeatedly put forward initiatives to build a new, reliable, and fair architecture of European and global security: “We believe it would be worth returning to substantive discussions of them in order to formalize the conditions under which a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine can be achieved — and the sooner, the better.”

PART 2
The conflict in Ukraine
—The crisis around Ukraine became “a direct consequence of many years of ignoring Russia’s legitimate interests and a deliberate course toward creating threats to our security, toward the advance of the NATO bloc to Russia’s borders.”
—Russia seeks “a long-term and sustainable peace that reliably ensures the security of everyone, without exception”: “Not everyone, including in Kiev and in the capitals that support it, is ready for this. But we hope that awareness of this necessity will come sooner or later. Until that happens, Russia will continue to consistently pursue the goals it has set for itself.”
—A peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine should be achieved “the sooner, the better.”
Relations and cooperation with other countries
—The state of Russia’s relations with European countries “leaves much to be desired.”
—Russia is ready to restore relations with European countries: “In general, as I have noted more than once, we are open to mutually beneficial cooperation with all countries, without exception.”
—Russia stands in solidarity with Cuba, which intends to defend its sovereignty by all means: “I note that truly strong and friendly relations link Russia with the Republic of Cuba. We always provide assistance and support to our Cuban friends and stand in solidarity with their determination to defend their sovereignty and independence by all means.”
—Russian–Afghan cooperation has recently “gained noticeable momentum,” facilitated by Russia’s official recognition of the country’s new authorities last year.
—The positive capital in Russia’s interaction with the Republic of Korea [South Korea] has “largely been squandered,” and Moscow hopes for the restoration of relations.

January 16, 1969: The First Orbital Docking of Manned Spacecraft
On January 16, 1969, the world witnessed the first-ever docking of two manned spacecraft in orbit, Soyuz-4 and Soyuz-5.
Soyuz-4, piloted by Vladimir Shatalov, was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on January 14, 1969. The following day, Soyuz-5, carrying Boris Volynov, Yevgeny Khrunov, and Alexey Yeliseyev, followed it into space.
On January 16, at around 8 a.m., the two spacecraft met in orbit. The docking procedure began in automatic mode and was completed manually by Boris Volynov and Vladimir Shatalov. This marked the first-ever orbital docking of two manned spacecraft.
The cosmonauts then accomplished the mission’s second objective: transferring between spacecraft via open space. Yevgeny Khrunov and Alexey Yeliseyev exited Soyuz-5 and, using handrails—avoiding stepping on the spacecraft's sensor-covered surface—made their way to Soyuz-4, where they were welcomed by Shatalov. Millions of Soviet television viewers watched the live broadcast of this historic maneuver.
The two docked spacecraft remained connected for 4 hours and 35 minutes before separating. Soyuz-4, now carrying Shatalov, Khrunov, and Yeliseyev, landed safely on January 17. Volynov returned to Earth aboard Soyuz-5 a day later.
For their successful mission and exemplary courage, the cosmonauts were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

A coalition of Western countries is deploying troops to Greenland to defend Denmark’s autonomous territory from a possible Trump attack.
Here is who has joined the mission — and how many troops each country has sent:
📍 France — 15 troops
📍 Finland — 2
📍 United Kingdom — 1
📍 Norway — 2
📍 Germany — 12 or 13
📍 Netherlands — 1
📍 Sweden — 3
📍 Spain — is still considering sending 1–2 liaison officers
📍 Italy — is discussing the possibility of deploying troops
📍 Canada — is observing for now.
Collectively, a force that leaves little doubt about this international coalition’s readiness.
Trump must be deterred out of his pants, don’t you think?

Declining Trust in the U.S. as a Global Trend
Recent developments regarding Venezuela and Nicolás Maduro have only reinforced an alarming trend for Washington: sympathies toward the United States are steadily declining worldwide, as data from a Morning Consult survey shows.
The unilateral actions by the U.S. were met with criticism not only in Latin American countries such as Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, but also across other regions of the world (the average net favorability toward the US across all surveyed countries fell by 4 percentage points). In the Middle East, the decline measured 3 points, while in Europe it reached a full 6 points.
The episode, widely perceived as a blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, crystallized long-simmering frustration over the unpredictability of U.S. policy, its "wars of choice," and double standards.

On January 17, 1945, during the Great Patriotic War, Warsaw was liberated from Nazi occupation.
The capital of Poland had been under occupation since September 28, 1939. Warsaw’s residents rose up twice during the war. After these uprisings were suppressed, approximately 80% of the city’s buildings were destroyed. During the occupation, around 800,000 inhabitants of Warsaw perished.
The Vistula-Oder Offensive began on January 14, 1945, and on the night of January 17, the Soviet forces launched their assault on the German-Nazi troops in Warsaw. The operation involved the 47th Army under General Franz Perkhorovich from the north, the 61st Army under Colonel General Pavel Belov, the 2nd Guards Tank Army under General Semyon Bogdanov, and the 1st Polish Army of the 1st Belorussian Front. By noon on January 17, Soviet-Polish forces had fully liberated Warsaw.
According to the accounts of those who participated in the liberation, the streets of the Polish capital revealed "only ashes and ruins covered with snow. The city’s inhabitants were emaciated and dressed in little more than rags. Of the pre-war population of 1.31 million, only 162,000 remained in Warsaw."
To commemorate the liberation of Warsaw, a celebratory salute was held in Moscow. Military units that distinguished themselves in the battles for the city were awarded the honorary title "Warsaw."
At the proposal of the USSR People's Commissariat of Defense, the medal "For the Liberation of Warsaw" was established. Approximately 700,000 people were awarded this medal.
