๐Ÿ”ฐSo both Can and Could are Modal Verbs. In general Could is considered more polite
(or formal) than Can๐Ÿ”ฐ

๐Ÿ”ฐCAN

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปThe three main uses of Can are: (1) ability 2) possibility and 3) permission.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปHowever there are some other used of Can as we will see below.

โœ๐ŸปTo express ability

โœ๐ŸปCan means to be (physically) able to do something OR to know how to do something.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปBirds can fly.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปElephants can't fly.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปI can speak two languages.

โœ๐ŸปTo express a possibility (in general)
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปThis refers to a theoretical possibility.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปNote: we don't use can to talk about future possibilities. For this you would use may or might.

๐Ÿ”ฐCOULD

โœ๐ŸปCould is similar to Can and often replaces Can in the past tense (though not always)

โœ๐ŸปTo express ability in the past

โœ๐ŸปI could ride a horse when I was younger but now I can't.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปShe could juggle eight balls when she was only 10 years old.
โœ๐ŸปPolite word used to ask for permission or to request something (in the present)
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปCould I please use your bathroom?

There Is Only One Way To Get Fluency

The research is clear-- there is only ONE way to get fluency. You must have a lot of understandable repetitive listening. That is the ONLY way.

Both of those words are important-- Understandable and Repetitive.
If you don't understand, you learn nothing. You will not improve.

Jobs and Professions (B1)

As has been the case for many years, jobs, or forms of employment wherein employees perform a service or duty in exchange for financial compensation, play a prominent role in society. Furthermore, all jobsโ€”even those of seemingly little significanceโ€”are important, as they simply wouldnโ€™t exist if their specific responsibilities werenโ€™t of value to employers (companies or persons that pay others for their work), customers (individuals who pay money for a product or service), and the economy generally.
