🌍 This is what the restructuring of logistics chains for the delivery of goods by sea from Southeast Asia to Israel looks like now, bypassing the Red Sea and the Suez Canal due to the actions of the Yemeni Houthis.
Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have increased container shipping costs by 61% over the past week.

The cost of shipping a 40-foot container has skyrocketed to $2,760 as many companies' ships have stopped sailing through the Red Sea and Suez Canal and have begun sailing around Africa from the south as an alternative. This lengthened each voyage by one to three weeks and led to a shortage of container ships.

🇷🇺❌🇺🇦 —🗺 Institute for the Study of War: Russian forces may intensify efforts to capture Kupyansk, Kharkiv Oblast, in the coming weeks and have a grouping of forces in the area that appears to be less degraded than Russian groupings responsible for offensive efforts elsewhere in eastern Ukraine.

➡️ Russian forces appear to have conditions conducive to intensifying operations in the Kupyansk direction with the intent of making territorial gains in areas that are more operationally significant than other areas that Russian forces are currently attempting to seize.

➡️ Ukrainian officials have stated that Russian forces aim to capture Kupyansk and Borova (35km west of Svatove) during winter 2024.

➡️ Ukrainian officials have not publicly reported any sudden buildup of Russian forces in the Kupyansk direction indicating that a large-scale offensive to advance to the Oskil River is imminent.

➡️ Russian forces appear to have gradually reconstituted units badly degraded during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in September 2022 and Russia’s failed winter-spring 2023 offensive.

➡️ The Russian command likely intends these relatively well-rested and reconstituted units to intensify localized offensive operations that Russian forces started in the area in October 2023.

🇺🇲 The Post Millennial: Austin's AWOL and Pentagon silence raise questions about how unwell the defense chief is

Austin, 70, the nation's highest-ranking military official, was hospitalized on Jan. 1 after he experienced "complications from a recent elective medical procedure," the newspaper recalls.

Austin did not report his absence to other senior US officials, including President Biden, and “went AWOL for several days despite heightened international tensions and increased demands on the Defense Department. Austin's responsibilities require him to be available at all times."

The lack of disclosure, which breaks with established practice, raises questions about the severity of Austin's illness, why he did not tell other senior officials and whether the Pentagon had a plan in place in case he was absent.

Austin was hospitalized on New Year's Day and the Biden administration was not informed until Thursday.

“This is unacceptable,” said Roger Wicker, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee. “With each passing hour, we are learning more about the department’s shocking defiance of the law.”

What role did the Office of the Minister of Defense play? When exactly was the President notified? What reasons did the State Department have for hiding information from the National Security Council? To what extent was the minister incapacitated due to the operation? Wicker listed the questions that arose.

Republican Senator Tom Cotton stressed that Austin is "a key link in the chain of command between the President and the military, including the nuclear chain of command, where the most important decisions must be made within minutes
