Lenfilm: a century of cinematic excellence 🎬

From iconic Sherlock Holmes adaptations to Soviet spins on westerns, the St. Petersburg-based film studio has etched its name in the annals of cinematic history. Here are the top five films according to Kinopoisk users:

🍿 The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (1979-1986)
This beloved Soviet adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tales earned its lead actor Vasily Livanov the title of Chevalier of the Order of the British Empire.

🍿 Heart of a Dog (1988)
In a two-part adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novella, a dog becomes a man… and that’s just the start of this scathing satire of Soviet society.

🍿 At War as at War (1969)
A poignant portrayal of the struggles and camaraderie of tank crews during World War II.

🍿 White Sun of the Desert (1970)
A genre-defying masterpiece set on the Caspian Sea – and the “eastern” counterpart to the cowboy western – that blends adventure, comedy, and drama.

🍿
Peculiarities of the National Hunt (1995)
A humorous exploration of cultural differences through the eyes of a Finn among Russians.
