Even though AI tools have become increasingly common in recent years, developers still need strong foundational knowledge in programming, system design, and problem-solving. My advice is to focus on building solid technical skills, stay curious, and actively participate in practical projects. ITMO provides a strong environment for this, but your growth will depend on how much effort you invest in learning and adapting.

What’s life like at ITMO dorms? Here’s all you need to know 👍
ITMO students have a wealth of options to choose from when it comes to housing, yet most of the university’s international students live in dorms, which are conveniently situated near central metro stations and ITMO campuses.
If you’d like to take a peek inside in advance – we’ve filmed all four dorms for you, check out this playlist or ITMO YouTube channel.
And in this post, we’ll cover some common questions:
⭐️ ️ Dorms are assigned to students by ITMO’s Student Services Office at the beginning of the academic year. Rest assured, no matter the dorm you’ve been given, all of them are equally comfortable and come with cool features. If any issues arise, dorm changes can only be made during the year if there are spots available.
⭐️ ️ There are two types of dorms. Block-type housing includes blocks of 2-3 rooms with a bathroom that you share only with your block neighbors and a kitchen on the floor. Whereas the corridor-type dorm has rooms situated along a corridor with both bathrooms and cooking facilities shared by all students living on the floor.
⭐️ ️ Dorm life is a great opportunity to boost your cooking skills! There is a kitchen on every floor, and you will find microwaves and ovens at the dorm. Some dorms even have cafeterias inside, while most are equipped with vending machines. Grocery stores are within walking distance, but you can also order a delivery.
⭐️ ️ Wi-Fi is accessible in the dorms, but you’ll need to connect it yourself by contacting a provider and paying for it. It’s common to share a connection with a neighbor who already has it set up.
⭐️ ️ If you want to enjoy some physical activity beyond PE classes, all listed dorms have gyms that students can use for free. However, to access the gym, you’ll need a medical certificate (details will be provided in the dorm).
⭐️ ️ Living in a dorm is a lot of fun! There are free recreation rooms where you can watch movies, play music, and read, as well as events organized by student communities in the dorm.

Ever wondered what makes a programmer tick? 👨💻
For Mohamed Ellithy from Egypt, it started with childhood curiosity about how computers really work. Now at ITMO, that curiosity has become a full‑blown passion for software engineering.
