I took IELTS on August 24.

Straight after finishing my CELTA course, I registered for IELTS.

I did some practice tests for 6 days in a row, from Tuesday to Saturday and took the test on Sunday. It was a crazy overload for my brain, considering the constant pressure from CELTA tasks for almost three months.

I didn’t have enough time to practice writing, as a result I could only finish task 2 fully (with approximately 370 words), while task 1 had only an introduction and overview paragraphs (around 40 words in total). Now, I’m pleasantly surprised that I got 6.5 for only 1 essay. It shows that my task 2 got 7.5 or 8. I asked for a breakdown, we’ll see.

So, I was excited to see an overall 8! This made me much happier than my previous 8 because this time my productive skills were much better.

Speaking 8.5! This made me really happy as I’ve gotten exactly 7.5, not higher or lower, for speaking several times before.

As for reading, I feel neutral. I can definitely improve it next time.

10-day challenge. Day 1

Task 2
In some parts of the world, a new law that limits the working hours of employees has been introduced. I think there are two main reasons for this introduction: health concerns and time spent with families. Due to a decreased level of stress and increased happiness rate that can be observed among population, I believe this is a positive shift in the employment sector.

Family time is, in my opinion, one of the key factors that led to this law enforcement. The majority of working adults spend most of their time at work as result they tend to be exhausted and prefer to have some rest instead of having a quality time with their loved ones, including children and spouses. Governments, as a consequence, could have decided to provide the citizens with enough time to make the family bonding stronger. Another, probably more important, reason why this policy was brought up in the first place is increasing work-related health issues among the general public. More often than not, it is our job that causes stress and burnout which are the main sources of other diseases such as heart attack and strokes. These culprits of severe health conditions might have been analyzed by the authorities, and they could have concluded that minimizing stress stimuli would make the residents much healthier.

I, therefore, do hold the view that this is a positive trend as it leads to less stress, relatively happy families and fewer burnouts in the workplace. When people spend more time with their children and significant others, they generally feel much happier as these relationships seem to help with relieving stress and uplifting mood. Consequently, happier and satisfied employees are much less likely to experience issues with burnout and productivity.

In conclusion, spending time with families and improving the general health of the public are the two key reasons why some countries introduced this new law. I do think that this limitation in working hours leads to positive incomes in terms of happiness level and work-life balance of employed individuals.

The pie charts compare the amount of water used for agriculture products in Australia and the share of income from these products in the Australian economy in 2004.

Overall, if we look at the first chart, we can see that the amount of water used for livestock headed the list, while dairy was a close second, which was followed by cotton. Interestingly, regarding income, the figure for livestock was one of the insignificant sources with fruit topping the list.
Looking at the details, there were three major water consuming sectors: livestock which was the most demanding with 36%, followed by dairy 19% and cotton 15%. A tenth was taken by sugar and almost the same amount of water, 11%, was used for fruit. Rice and vegetables were the lowest in the ranking constituting 5% and 4% respectively.

However, a different scenario was observed in the share of income from these products. Fruit was on the top of the list with 44%, which was followed by dairy with slightly less than a fourth (24 %). The third place was taken by cotton comprising 13%. The income from sugar , livestock and vegetables made up almost the same amount 7%, 6% and 5% in turn, while rice accounted for only a mere 1% profit.

Day 2.
Task 1

The tables compare the outcomes of two surveys which were conducted in two different years (1980 and 2010) about varying aspects of residing in one particular city.

Overall, the positive responses were far more than the negative or neither positive nor negative ones in both years. Interestingly, education and healthcare headed the list of good responses, while the figure for the same category of shops and transport experienced a decline.

In 1980, positive results of healthcare topped the list with 82%, while education and environment came second both making up the same proportion: 72%. In contrast, neither good nor bad results of them accounted for 23% for education, 22% for environment and a tenth for healthcare, whereas less than 10% of the votes all of these categories were bad. As for shops, employment and transport, good results were between 64% and 52%, while neither nor category showed under 24% for them. Transport was labelled as the worst with 32% of bad votes, while the other two received only around 10% bad results.

In the second survey, the results changed significantly with education taking the first place increasing to 82% of good votes. Healthcare and environment comprised slightly more than 70% of good results each. All of them received less than 16% neither good nor bad and bad results. By contrast, shops, employment and transport the least popular comprising 60%, 72% and 39% in turn.

Ps. I am not satisfied with this one as it was quite difficult to write for the table. But hey, keeping the discipline :)

Task 2

Some people believe that the main focus of schools should be educating to be successful at work rather than ensuring academic success. I fully agree with this idea because theoretical knowledge is not always the most important element of career success, usually other soft skills should also be improved.

Academic success does not always guarantee that a student will be an important asset in a workplace. Firstly, although academic excellence is expected from nearly all potential employees, it is not the only key factor while deciding if a candidate is suitable for a vacancy during a job interview. Employers are highly likely to analyze other non-academic abilities of an interviewee, such as politeness, critical thinking and punctuality. Teachers, for example, are required to have those skills together with a decent level of subject knowledge to conduct fruitful lessons.

I, therefore, think that it is soft skills that need to be fostered at a young age. When youngsters grow up, it seems to become much more challenging to develop crucial skills, such as communication, problem solving, creative thinking. Since these characteristics are, more often than not, as necessary as expert knowledge in the professional success of almost any individual, they must be given an equal attention during school years. Consequently, equipped with both soft and hard skills, school leavers will be more confident and ready to get a job and excel professionally.

In conclusion, I hold the view that the abovementioned soft skills should be promoted by schools instead of solely emphasizing an academic performance as these skills tend to be equally important in the real world working conditions.

Ps. The essays are not proof read so there might be some mistakes.

Day 3.

TASK 1: The graph below shows the average house prices in 3 countries between the yeras 1997-2014.

The line graph compares the average prices for housing in three various countries during 17 years from 1997 to 2014.

Overall, there were upward trends in the figures of all three countries during the whole time period. The prices of houses in country A saw the largest increase topping the list at the end whereas country B was the close second with country C experiencing the lowest growth.

Looking at the details, the prices of houses in all three countries stood at a relatively similar point around 130k dollars, with country A being first and country B and C taking the second and third positions respectively. As for A, having remained almost stable for four years, the prices rocketed reaching well over 500k dollars in 2003. In comparison, housing prices in B and C went up gradually till 2005 and 2007 finishing at around 350k dollars and just under 250k dollars respectively.

However, there were different levels of drop in each country's figures during the middle of the period. If we look at A, we can see that the prices for accomodation decreased slightly by roughly 50k dollars showing around 440k dollars after which it peaked at 630k dollars. By contrast, the figures for both B and C experienced a relatively small drop in the same year 2008, demostrating just over 250k dollars and about 50k less accordingly. Then, they both had undergone a significant growth before reaching approximately 500k and just over 250k dollars in the final year.

TASK 2: Advertising should be banned, because there is no use of it some think it has damaging effects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people think that advertisements should be banned as they are useless and have negative impacts. I, however, totally disagree with this view as it is an essential component of a majority of businesses, and banning this important marketing tool can lead to a decline in the national economy and budget of a government.

The first key reason why promoting products shouldn't be banned is that it is the basis of almost any enterprise. By showing ads on TV or social media, for for-profit organizations attract substantially more customers to their products and services than solely depending on word of mouth. Consequently, those companies earn an increasing amount of profit and thrive in a market. Furthermore, ads help popularize extremely innovative and useful products, which otherwise could go unnoticed. Take computers for example, if their manufacturers had not run promotions of these wonder devices in the early 2000s, those companies would have probably gone bankrupt due to the lack of demand, and people would still be spending countless amount of time on the tasks which can be done with a click of a computer button.
Therefore, I think that ads are beneficial not only for the businesses but also for the society.

Another, probably more important, benefit of this marketing instrument is that it leads to the growth of the national economy and the budget of a country. Since the promotion of goods and services increases a customer flow, entrepreneurships become much more lucrative and contribute more taxes to the government. If these companies become multinational ones, then their contribution can make up a substantial share of the national economy. In South Korea, for instance, Samsung is one of the largest tax contributors.

In conclusion, I believe that advertising should not be banned at any costs as it benefits both societies and business. Taking this essential opportunity from businessmen is highly likely to result in the bankrupcy of profitable multinationals and subsequently in the decline of overall economy.
