📍Krashen’s Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis📍

فرضية الاكتساب والتعلّم عند كراشن

🔖Krashen distinguishes between two ways of developing a second language:

📌Acquisition – الاكتساب
A subconscious and natural process.
It happens through meaningful communication and exposure to the language.
Similar to how children acquire their first language.
Example: A child learns English by listening and communicating with English speakers.

📌Learning – التعلّم
A conscious process.
It happens through formal instruction, such as studying grammar rules and vocabulary.
Example: A student learns the past tense by studying its grammar rules.

⭐ Key idea:

Acquisition = subconscious + natural communication
Learning = conscious + formal instruction

باختصار:
كراشن يرى أن هناك طريقتين لتطور اللغة الثانية:
الاكتساب يحدث بشكل طبيعي وغير واعٍ من خلال التواصل، بينما التعلّم يحدث بشكل واعٍ من خلال دراسة القواعد والمفردات والتعليم الرسمي.

Acquisition is subconscious, while Learning is conscious.

📚📚
📌 Krashen’s Monitor Hypothesis

📍Krashen’s Monitor Hypothesis states that learned language knowledge (conscious knowledge of grammar rules) can be used to monitor or edit what we say or write, but it is not responsible for producing spontaneous language.

- The Monitor works as an editor. Before or after producing language, learners may use grammar rules to check and correct their mistakes.

- Krashen says that three conditions are needed to use the Monitor:

💡Time – The learner needs enough time to think about the grammar rule.
💡Focus on form – The learner must focus on correctness and grammar.
💡Knowledge of the rule – The learner must know the grammatical rule.

🔸Example:
A student says: “She go to school.”
Then thinks about the grammar rule and corrects it:
“She goes to school.”

👉 Key idea: Acquisition produces spontaneous language, while learning acts as a Monitor to check and correct it.

⸻

♦️♦️

معرفة القاعدة (Knowledge of the Rule): يجب أن يعرف القاعدة أصلًا.

مثال:
يقول الطالب: She go to school.
ثم يتذكر قاعدة Present Simple ويصحح نفسه:
She goes to school.

⭐ Acquisition → produces language spontaneously.
⭐ Learning → acts as a Monitor to check and correct language.

▪️Time + Focus on Form + Rule Knowledge = Monitor
📚📚Krashen’s Natural Order Hypothesis 📚📚

🟠Krashen’s Natural Order Hypothesis states that learners acquire the grammatical structures of a language in a predictable and natural order.

🔺This means that some grammatical structures are acquired earlier, while others are acquired later, regardless of the order in which they are taught.

🔺The order is not necessarily the same as the teaching order.

💡Example:
A learner may acquire simple grammatical structures first and more complex structures later, even if the teacher teaches the complex structures earlier.

👉 Key idea:
Language learners acquire grammar in a natural, predictable order, and teachers cannot completely control or change this order through instruction.

⸻

⭐

Natural Order = Learners acquire language structures in a predictable order, regardless of the order in which they are taught.

📌
Natural order ≠ Teaching order
الترتيب الطبيعي للاكتساب ليس بالضرورة نفس ترتيب التدريس.
📙📕📒📘

🔷Krashen’s Input Hypothesis 🔷

🔸Krashen’s Input Hypothesis states that learners acquire a language when they are exposed to comprehensible input that is slightly above their current language level.

🔸Krashen calls this “i + 1”:

i = the learner’s current level.
+1 = language that is slightly more advanced than the learner’s current level.

🔸The learner does not need to understand every word. They can understand the meaning through context, pictures, gestures, and familiar words.

💡Example:
If a student knows:

“The boy is eating.”

The teacher might say:

“The boy is eating an apple because he is hungry.”

🔖The new language is slightly beyond the student’s current level, but the meaning is still understandable.

⸻
🟠🟠
تقول فرضية المدخلات (Input Hypothesis) عند كراشن إن الشخص يكتسب اللغة عندما يتعرض إلى لغة مفهومة تكون أعلى قليلًا من مستواه الحالي.

وهذا ما يسميه كراشن:

i + 1

i = مستوى المتعلم الحالي.

The boy is eating.
الولد يأكل.

المعلم يقول:

The boy is eating an apple because he is hungry.
الولد يأكل تفاحة لأنه جائع.

هنا أضاف المعلم كلمات وتراكيب جديدة، لكنها مفهومة من السياق → i + 1.

⭐ نقطة مهمة:

Comprehensible Input → Language Acquisition

أي أن المدخلات اللغوية المفهومة تؤدي إلى اكتساب اللغة.

📌Easy way to remember:

Input Hypothesis = We acquire language by understanding language slightly above our current level (i + 1).

نكتسب اللغة عندما نفهم مدخلات لغوية أعلى من مستوانا الحالي بدرجة بسيطة (i + 1).

🟠 Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis🟠

📍Affective Filter Hypothesis is one of Krashen’s theories of second language acquisition.

📍It explains that emotional factors can affect how well a learner acquires a second language.

📍When learners feel anxiety, fear, stress, embarrassment, or lack of motivation, their affective filter becomes high. This prevents language input from reaching the brain effectively, so language acquisition becomes more difficult.

📍When learners feel relaxed, confident, motivated, and comfortable, their affective filter is low. This allows more comprehensible input to reach the brain, making language acquisition easier.

🔷In simple words:

Low affective filter = better language acquisition.
High affective filter = more difficult language acquisition.

💡Example:
🔺A student is afraid of making mistakes when speaking English. She feels nervous and embarrassed, so her affective filter is high, and she learns less.

🔺Another student feels comfortable making mistakes and is encouraged by the teacher. His affective filter is low, so he is more likely to acquire English.

⸻

High affective filter → Anxiety/Fear → Less language acquisition

Low affective filter → Confidence/Motivation → Better language acquisition

🔑 الفكرة الأساسية:

The lower the affective filter, the better the language acquisition.

يعني: كلما انخفض الحاجز العاطفي، كان اكتساب اللغة أفضل.

📚📚
📘📕📙

🟠🟠The Role of Grammar in Krashen’s View🟠🟠

📌According to Krashen, grammar is not the main way of acquiring a language.

📌He distinguishes between acquisition and learning:

♦️Acquisition: A subconscious process that happens naturally through meaningful and comprehensible input.
♦️Learning: A conscious process of studying grammar rules and language forms.

📌Krashen believes that learning grammar rules does not directly lead to language acquisition. Instead, learners acquire grammar naturally when they are exposed to enough comprehensible input.

📌Grammar can still be useful as a Monitor. Learners may use consciously learned grammar rules to check or correct their language, especially when they have enough time, know the rule, and are focused on correctness.

💡Example:
A student learns the rule: “He plays” rather than “He play.”
Knowing this rule may help the student correct a sentence, but according to Krashen, simply memorizing the rule does not guarantee that the student will naturally use it correctly in conversation.

⸻
🟠🟠

حسب Krashen، القواعد النحوية Grammar ليست الطريقة الأساسية لاكتساب اللغة.

كراشن يفرق بين:

1. Acquisition – اكتساب اللغة
يحدث بشكل طبيعي ولا واعٍ من خلال التعرض للغة وفهم Comprehensible Input.

2. Learning –

⭐

Grammar learning does not cause language acquisition; it mainly serves as a Monitor.

يعني:
تعلم القواعد لا يسبب اكتساب اللغة، وإنما تستخدم القواعد التي تعلمناها لمراجعة وتصحيح اللغة.

🔑 Krashen → Acquisition = Comprehensible Input
🔑 Learning grammar = Monitor

🟠Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH)🟠

📍The Critical Period Hypothesis states that there is a limited period in a person’s life, especially during childhood, when learning a language is easier and more successful. After this period, language acquisition becomes more difficult, particularly for achieving native-like pronunciation and grammar.

تنص فرضية الفترة الحرجة (CPH) على أن هناك فترة محدودة في حياة الإنسان، خاصةً في مرحلة الطفولة، يكون فيها اكتساب اللغة أسهل وأكثر نجاحًا. وبعد هذه الفترة يصبح اكتساب اللغة أكثر صعوبة، خصوصًا الوصول إلى نطق وقواعد مشابهة للمتحدث الأصلي.

📌📌 باختصار:
CPH = Language is easier to acquire during childhood than after puberty.
الفترة الحرجة = اكتساب اللغة يكون أسهل في الطفولة مقارنةً بما بعد البلوغ.
📘📙📕

-

-

💡CPH Advocates’ View💡

📍CPH advocates believe that there is a critical period for language acquisition. During this period, especially in childhood, the brain is more capable of learning language naturally and achieving native-like pronunciation and grammar. After puberty, this ability decreases, making second-language learning more difficult.

يرى مؤيدو فرضية الفترة الحرجة (CPH) أن هناك فترة حرجة لاكتساب اللغة، وخاصة في مرحلة الطفولة، يكون فيها الدماغ أكثر قدرة على تعلم اللغة بشكل طبيعي والوصول إلى نطق وقواعد مشابهة للمتحدث الأصلي. وبعد سن البلوغ تقل هذه القدرة، ويصبح تعلم اللغة الثانية أكثر صعوبة.

باختصار 👍🏻:
CPH advocates → Children learn languages more easily and can achieve native-like proficiency, while language learning becomes harder after puberty.

♦️🔺🔷▪️

.

.
.

.

💡CPH Opponents’ View💡

📍CPH opponents argue that there is no strict critical period for language acquisition. They believe that people can learn a second language at any age, even after puberty. Age may affect the speed or level of learning, but it does not completely prevent successful language acquisition.

.
.
يرى معارضو فرضية الفترة الحرجة (CPH) أنه لا توجد فترة حرجة صارمة لاكتساب اللغة. ويعتقدون أن الإنسان يستطيع تعلم اللغة الثانية في أي عمر، حتى بعد سن البلوغ. وقد يؤثر العمر في سرعة التعلم أو مستواه، لكنه لا يمنع اكتساب اللغة بنجاح.

👍🏻باختصار للاختبار:
Opponents → Language can be learned at any age; there is no strict critical period.
المعارضون → يمكن تعلم اللغة في أي عمر، ولا توجد فترة حرجة صارمة.
