A study done at MIT showed that a substantial portion of public-health skepticism was highly informed, scientifically literate, and sophisticated in the use of data. Skeptics used the same data sets as those with the orthodox views on public health.

“New studies show that fully vaccinated people who become infected carry as much virus as unvaccinated people do, suggesting they may be able to transmit the infection to others, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told reporters on a telephone briefing.”

Children Born During Pandemic Have Significantly Lower IQs Than Normal, Shocking U.S. Study Finds
📝@COVID19Up: Children born during the coronavirus pandemic have significantly reduced verbal, motor and overall cognitive performance compared with children born before, a shocking new US study suggests.
The first few years of a child’s life are critical to their cognitive development. But with COVID-19 triggering the closure of businesses, nurseries, schools and playgrounds, life for infants changed considerably, with limited stimulation at home and less interaction with the world outside in addition to stressed out parents as they tried to balance work and childcare.
In the decade preceding the pandemic, the mean IQ score on standardised tests for children aged between three months and three years of age hovered around 100, but for children born during the pandemic that number tumbled to 78.
“It’s not subtle by any stretch,” said lead study author Sean Deoni, associate professor of paediatrics (research) at Brown University. “You don’t typically see things like that, outside of major cognitive disorders.”
The biggest reason behind the falling scores is likely the lack of stimulation and interaction at home, said Deoni. “Parents are stressed and frazzled … that interaction the child would normally get has decreased substantially.”
Given this data comes from a relatively affluent part of the US, where social support and unemployment benefits are generous, the fear is that things could be worse in poorer parts of the country and the world.

The Science Behind Masking Kids in Classrooms at School Remains Very Unimpressive
🇺🇸😷@COVID19Up: At the end of May 2021, the CDC published a notable, yet mostly ignored, large-scale study of COVID-19 transmission in American schools.
A few major news outlets covered its release briefly, however, very important findings about preventative measures like mask mandates were absent from the summary and not widely reported. These findings cast doubt on the impact of many of the most common mitigation measures in American schools. Distancing, hybrid models, classroom barriers, HEPA filters, and, most notably, requiring student masking were each found to not have a statistically significant benefit.
In other words, these measures could not be said to be effective. And in the realm of science and public-health policy outside the U.S., the implications of these particular findings are not exactly controversial.
The U.K., Ireland, all of Scandinavia, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy have already exempted kids, with varying age cutoffs, from wearing masks in classrooms. There’s no evidence of more outbreaks in schools in those countries relative to schools in the U.S., where the solid majority of kids wore masks for an entire academic year and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
These countries, along with the WHO have explicitly recognized that the decision to mask students carries with it potential academic and social harms for children and may lack a clear benefit.
