“The strong believer is more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, but there is goodness in both of them. Be eager for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be frustrated. If something befalls you, then do not say: If only I had done something else! Rather say: Allah has decreed what He wills. Verily, the phrase ‘if only’ opens the way for the work of Satan.”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ هَمَّامٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْقُرَّاءِ اسْتَقِيمُوا فَقَدْ سُبِقْتُمْ سَبْقًا بَعِيدًا فَإِنْ أَخَذْتُمْ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالاً، لَقَدْ ضَلَلْتُمْ ضَلاَلاً بَعِيدًا‏.‏

Hudhayfah رضي الله عنه said:

“O group of reciters! Follow the straight path, for then you will have proceeded by a great distance, but if you divert right or left, then you will have gone far astray.”

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ،

قَالَ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَاسْتُخْلِفَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بَعْدَهُ، وَكَفَرَ مَنْ كَفَرَ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ قَالَ عُمَرُ لأَبِي بَكْرٍ كَيْفَ تُقَاتِلُ النَّاسَ، وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ‏.‏ فَمَنْ قَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ‏.‏ عَصَمَ مِنِّي مَالَهُ وَنَفْسَهُ، إِلاَّ بِحَقِّهِ، وَحِسَابُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ‏"‌‏.‏

فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ لأُقَاتِلَنَّ مَنْ فَرَّقَ بَيْنَ الصَّلاَةِ وَالزَّكَاةِ، فَإِنَّ الزَّكَاةَ حَقُّ الْمَالِ، وَاللَّهِ لَوْ مَنَعُونِي عِقَالاً كَانُوا يُؤَدُّونَهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَقَاتَلْتُهُمْ عَلَى مَنْعِهِ‏.‏ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ إِلاَّ أَنْ رَأَيْتُ اللَّهَ قَدْ شَرَحَ صَدْرَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ لِلْقِتَالِ فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ‏.‏

قَالَ ابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ عَنِ اللَّيْثِ عَنَاقًا‏.‏ وَهْوَ أَصَحُّ‏.‏

Narrated Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه:

When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ died and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was appointed as a Caliph after him, some of the Arabs reverted to disbelief.

‘Umar رضي الله عنه said to Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, “How can you fight against the people what’s the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they says: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allāh’ is pardoned with regards to his wealth and his life from me unless he deserves a legal punishment, and his reckoning will be with Allāh!

Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه said, “By Allāh, I will fight whoever discriminates between Zakāh and Salāh - for Zakāh is the compulsory right to be taken from the wealth. By Allāh, if they refuse to give me even a tying rope (of a camel) which they used to give to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, I would fight them for withholding it.”

‘Umar رضي الله عنه said, ‘By Allāh, it was nothing, except that I saw that Allāh had opened the chest of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه to fight, and I came to know for certain that was the truth.”

[Ibn Bukayr and ‘Abdullāh mentioned upon the authority of Layth, an infant she-camel [in place of the tying rope] and it is more authentic.]
