Giant pinecone wow 🌲👀

In Charles G. Beaudette's 2002 book Excess Heat – Why Cold Fusion Research Prevailed (MES Local PDF), he writes about the Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons' hole-in-the-floor palladium experiment. Although the experiment was running for several months, it wasn't until Pons increased the applied current from 0.75 amperes to 1.5 amperes, then sent his son Joey to turn off the current at the end of the day, and they left for the night. The next morning, Joey entered the lab and found the experiment in shambles. Much of the palladium fused (melting point 1,554°C), part of it vapourized, and the fume cupboard housing the experiment was destroyed. Pons’ graduate student, Kevin Ashley, said the lab was a mess, there was "particulate dust in the air", the experiment made a 1-foot hole in the very hard bench top and made a 4-inch-deep pit in the concrete floor! 🤯

Interestingly, the foreword for the book was written and signed by the author of 2001 Space Odyssey, Arthur C. Clarke! 🤯
