M+ Market Update – 20Jan25
Market Rebounded After Hitting Oversold Zone

The local bourse closed higher, led by the Utilities and Banking heavyweights. In the US, softer-than-expected inflationary data, coupled with stronger earnings from major banks had contributed to the buying interest on Wall Street. Meanwhile, all eyes will be focusing on President Trump’s inauguration speech later today. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil experienced a marginal pullback below the USD81 level, while gold price is hovering above USD2,700. In anticipation of Trump’s supportive stance towards cryptocurrency, Bitcoin continued to stay elevated above the USD100k mark, while CPO prices rebounded slightly to close at RM4,190.

Sector Focus: As Malaysia is heading the ASEAN chair this year, we are optimistic on the Renewable Energy and Tourism sectors. With Trump’s inauguration, the anticipated intensified US-China trade war could benefit the Technology sector. Lastly, state-specific theme plays like Penang LRT development, Sarawak as a regional energy hub and also formalisation of JS-SEZ may boost the Construction and Property sectors in the near to mid-term.

All Eyes Are On Trump’s Policies

The local bourse continued to close higher, buoyed by gains in the Banking and Utilities heavyweights. In the US, market was closed due to Martin Luther King Jr. public holiday, with investors focusing on President Trump’s inauguration speech and his series of executive actions. Meanwhile, other key economic highlights this week include (i) BoJ interest rate decision, (ii) initial jobless claims in the US and also (iii) crude oil inventories. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil broke below the USD81 mark, while gold price continued to hover around the USD2,700 level. Trump’s supportive stance towards cryptocurrency had also led Bitcoin to an all-time-high at USD109k. Meanwhile, CPO prices traded flat around the RM4,200 level.

Sector Focus: With Malaysia heading the ASEAN chair, we remain about the Renewable Energy and Tourism sectors. Although the Energy sector could see continued strength due to Russian oil sanctions and declining crude oil inventories data last week, the optimism may fade as Donald Trump planned to increase the US oil production, thus limiting the upside potential of crude oil price. Meanwhile, the ongoing tariffs on China’s products, which could weaken China’s economy, are likely to reduce global oil demand.

Positive Outlook for Malaysian Construction Sector

Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) projects a 17.7% earnings growth for construction stocks in 2025, driven by key infrastructure developments.

These include flood mitigation projects on the East Coast, renewable energy projects in Sarawak, and initiatives within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Leading construction companies such as Gamuda (GAMUDA), Sunway Construction (SUNCON), and IJM Construction (IJM) could benefit from this.

Maybank IB also anticipates more projects to adopt the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model under the Government’s PPP masterplan, favoring financially robust construction firms.

Investors bullish on the sector may consider leveraged exposure via Call Warrants such as GAMUDA-C3B, SUNCON-C18, and IJM-C86.

💡 Malaysia Strategy – Limited impact from U.S. AI chip restrictions

Macquarie Equities Research (MQ Research) released a flashnote on 17th January, highlighting the Biden-Harris administration’s recent announcement on its plans to impose AI (artificial intelligence) chip sales restriction. MQ Research estimates Tier-1 entities make up about 69% of total end-users in Malaysia (3.5GW).

Further, given its status as Nvidia's preferred sovereign AI partner and no exposure to Tier-3 customers, MQ Research believes YTL Power (YTLPOWR) can easily qualify for the "National Verified End User" (NVEU) status. MQ Research also states that any potential slowdown in data centre deployment will have no impact on Tenaga Nasional (TENAGA) in the next three years, as Regulatory Period 4 (RP4) base capex (implying 4.7% average demand growth) will provide a floor for regulated earnings. MQ Research believes the risk is higher for NationGate Holdings (NATGATE) given higher exposure to Tier-3 clients as end-users. However, MQ Research expects frontloading of orders to be significant in 1H25.

Investors who wish to gain leveraged exposure to these names may do so via our structured call warrants, which move in tandem in price with the underlying. YTLPOWR-C72 currently trades at a bid/ask price of RM0.100/0.105, gaining over 11% in price with the moves in the underlying. Further, TENAGA-C2T is currently one of the more sensitive warrants in the market, moving approximately 1 tick (RM0.005) for every 6 ticks (RM0.12) change in the underlying and trades at a bid/ask price of RM0.085/0.090.

On the other hand, NATGATE-CB is currently trading at a bid/ask price of RM0.050/0.055, one of the lowest absolute prices among NATGATE warrants, despite having gained over 42% in price with NATGATE’s share price movement this morning.

✅ As Trump officially become US President, analyst expect Trump may relax the export restriction policy on artificial intelligence chips signed by former President Biden.

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Construction Rebound Continues

The FBM KLCI printed another green day today with leading movers emerging from the construction and utilities space. The positive sentiment spilled over to the broad market with bargain hunting accelerating in the construction sector. Post-Trump inauguration, tech/industrial sector stocks (both semicon and EMS related) also saw a move upwards as Trump refrained from announcing new tariffs.

Our analysts have shed some light on the recent construction sector index drop, citing the US’ latest rule on AI data centre location as the cause. Pricing in some risk, they have shaved GAMUDA (Target Price: MYR 5.00) and IJM (Target Price: MYR 3.60) target prices slightly. Following the recent sell-off, both stocks now offer potential upsides of +13.3% and +30.4%, respectively, as at midday break. Full report on the Maybank Trade MY app.
