Asian markets trade in sea of red on first volley of US tariffs
• Asian indices are opening in the red on its first full week of trading following the Lunar New Year break. The Hang Seng Index February futures are 1.7% lower to 19,987 as of 1037AM, the Hang Seng Tech Feb futures down 1.4% to 4,638 while the Nikkei225 March futures are down 2.8% to 38,510. The gloomy open matches the 2% drop in US index futures of Nasdaq and S&P.
• Consequently, put warrants are amongst the top gainers this morning, with the two US index put warrants tracking the Nasdaq-100 and S&P500 up more than 45%, while put warrants tracking the Nikkei225 are 25% to 34% higher.
• The fall in the indices reflect the reaction to Trump's executive orders on Saturday which placed an additional 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada (excluding energy at 10%) as well as an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The rationale is tied to "an extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs" rather than specific trade issues, though trade deficits with these countries were cited.
• The order states that tariffs will remain in place "until the crisis is alleviated." The only guideline as to what this would entail is "upon the President’s determination of sufficient action to alleviate the crisis." This implies a highly subjective interpretation of if China can ever comply.
• At the same time, the order notes that retaliation could "increase or expand in scope the duties imposed." This implies that the US is already looking to further increase trade tensions. China may take a more moderate approach to potential negotiations and may not look to further worsen trade ties.
• Following the additional tariffs imposed, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a 25% counter-tariff on $107 billion of US goods, while Mexican leader Claudia Sheinbaum pledged retaliatory levies.
• China’s reaction was more muted. China's Commerce Ministry issued a statement expressing strong “dissatisfaction” and vowing “corresponding countermeasures,” without elaborating. It pledged to file a complaint at the World Trade Organization and called on the US to “manage differences on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and mutual respect.”
• Some analysts believe that Trump’s action “is less severe than market participants and Chinese policymakers feared,” while others think there may be potential for more antagonistic actions against China in the future given several prominent hawks in the current administration.
• Investors worried about further pullbacks in global markets can consider using put warrants to hedge against downside moves. View their live matrix here.

M+ Market Update – 04Feb25
Slight Relief After Trump Pausing Tariffs
The FBMKLCI edged lower as heavyweights like PCHEM and YTLPOWR dragged the key index amid renewed selling pressure. In the US, while all three indices showed narrowed losses following President Trump’s statement on pausing the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, the key index still ended the day in the red. Meanwhile, the US ISM Manufacturing PMI came in better-than-expected, and traders continue to monitor the (i) ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI, (ii) initial jobless claims, and (iii) China’s Caixin services PMI this week. In the commodities market, Brent Crude is still trading around USD76 per barrel, while gold prices remain elevated near its all-time high of USD2,817 level. CPO prices experienced a breakout above the RM4,300 mark.
Sector Focus: With President Trump imposing an additional 10% tariffs (on top of the 50% currently imposed) on China’s rubber medical and surgical glove exports into the US, we believe it should bode well for sentiment on local glove counters. Meanwhile, given the recent pullback in the construction sector, we believe the significant discount in share prices might present bargain hunting opportunities for the construction counters, supported by JSSEZ initiatives and the ongoing data centre developments in the country.
Stocks to watch:
Utility: GASMSIA, *KJTS*, *PEKAT*
Healthcare: KOSSAN, *SUPERMX*
Consumer: *FOCUSP*, GCB
