M+ Market Update – 04Feb25
Slight Relief After Trump Pausing Tariffs

The FBMKLCI edged lower as heavyweights like PCHEM and YTLPOWR dragged the key index amid renewed selling pressure. In the US, while all three indices showed narrowed losses following President Trump’s statement on pausing the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, the key index still ended the day in the red. Meanwhile, the US ISM Manufacturing PMI came in better-than-expected, and traders continue to monitor the (i) ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI, (ii) initial jobless claims, and (iii) China’s Caixin services PMI this week. In the commodities market, Brent Crude is still trading around USD76 per barrel, while gold prices remain elevated near its all-time high of USD2,817 level. CPO prices experienced a breakout above the RM4,300 mark.

Sector Focus: With President Trump imposing an additional 10% tariffs (on top of the 50% currently imposed) on China’s rubber medical and surgical glove exports into the US, we believe it should bode well for sentiment on local glove counters. Meanwhile, given the recent pullback in the construction sector, we believe the significant discount in share prices might present bargain hunting opportunities for the construction counters, supported by JSSEZ initiatives and the ongoing data centre developments in the country.

Stocks to watch:

Utility: GASMSIA, *KJTS*, *PEKAT*
Healthcare: KOSSAN, *SUPERMX*
Consumer: *FOCUSP*, GCB
Gold: AUMAS
Plantation: *JTIASA*

SD Guthrie’s MYR250 Million Acquisition

SD Guthrie (SDG) has acquired a 48% stake in Netherlands-based Marvesa Supply Chain Services BV for MYR250 million from Dutch private equity firm, Parcom.

As one of the world’s largest producers of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO), SDG accounts for 12% of global CSPO production and operates across 12 countries.

The acquisition strengthens SDG’s position in the European animal feed and biofuel industries, aligning with its long-term strategy to integrate its value chain and expand into non-palm sectors.

Bullish investors may consider SDG-C22, the most sensitive Call Warrant issued over SDG available on Bursa Malaysia, with a sensitivity of 2.1 ticks.

💥 Asian markets ding-dong on Trump's on-off tariff stance

• Asian markets are swinging between yesterday's negative zone and this morning's recovery after headlines emerged on Trump's one-month delay on tariffs on Mexico and Canada, and intention to hold further talks with China

• The reversal in sentiment came following Trump's conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, three days after signing an executive order to impose additional tariffs on Mexico and Canada

• The delay with Mexico and Canada bolsters the view that Trump sees tariffs as a negotiating ploy — but is still reluctant to inflict economic pain on Americans. His move to invoke an emergency and impose tariffs on the two nations and China is the most extensive act of protectionism taken by a US president in almost a century.

• Asian indices are currently reversing all of yesterday's losses. The Nikkei225 March futures is up 1.4% to 39,135 as of 10:04am, while the HSI futures is up 2.6% to 20,858 and the Hang Seng TECH Index (HSTECH) futures is up 4.3% to 4,963 as of 10:19am.

• Focus calls HSI-CWA5 and HSI-CWA6 have each surged about 40%, while NIKKEI-CK and HSTECH-C18 have gained 13.5% and 50%, respectively. Meanwhile the focus HSI and HSTECH puts are down 30-50%, while NIKKEI-HI has fallen 12.3%.

• Investors keen to ride on the Asian indices' volatility today may wish to do so via the focus HSI, HSTECH and NIKKEI warrants. View their live matrix here.

Market sentiment improved with most sectors trading in the green, except for healthcare and industrials. The construction sector outperformed and continues to see a rebound, while the energy sector traded sideways before ending higher. Meanwhile, gold-related stocks surged near all-time highs, driven by safe-haven demand amid ongoing US tariff concerns.
