Improved Forecasts for Malaysia’s Auto Sector

Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) Research has revised its 2025 total industry volume (TIV) forecast for the Malaysian auto sector to 790,000 units, up from 750,000, citing mass-market growth driven by higher consumer spending and wage hikes.

Additionally, the postponement of the open market value (OMV) revision to Jan'26 will delay price hikes on completely knocked-down (CKD) vehicles, supporting near-term demand.

Investors seeking leveraged exposure to the Malaysian automotive sector may consider DRBHCOM-C3K, the longest dated Call Warrants issued over DRBHCOM and also the most responsive DRBHCOM Call Warrants on Bursa Malaysia.

🚨 Brace for more volatility in the Hang Seng indices ahead of planned Trump-Xi negotiations

• With Trump's 10% tariff on China kicking in yesterday, China announced a series of retaliatory actions against the US. An additional 10% tariffs were added on crude oil, agricultural equipment and large displacement fuel vehicles imports; 15% additional tariffs were placed on coal and LNG. This is estimated to affect around US$14 billion in imports, which pales in comparison to total China exports to the US of US$525 billion.

• Meanwhile, China's Ministry of Commerce added PVH Group, owner of the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands, and Illumina, a gene-sequencing equipment maker, to the unreliable entity list - which in turn restricts their investment and personnel movement in China and may lead to fines

• China also added export controls on Tungsten, Tellurium, Bismuth, Molybdenum and Indium. This has implications for global high-tech supply chains.

• These actions come ahead of the planned call between Presidents Trump and Xi and look to set the table for initial trade negotiations. Energy remains a key point of leverage for China given Trump's focus on expanding US energy exports. Similarly, the use of China's entity list on non-defense companies provides a warning to US businesses looking to remain active in China.

• Given the on-off tariff headlines this week, investors may find themselves whiplashed by the large swing in market direction, particularly in Chinese stocks. Those who wish to gain leveraged exposure to this large market swing may wish to do so via our focus call and/or put warrants tracking the broad Hang Seng indices.

• Focus call warrants HSI-CWA5 and HSI-CWCG have fallen 13% and 17% in price, while focus put warrants HSI-PWB8 and HSI-PWBW have surged 11% and 18% in price respectively. View their live matrix here.

Malaysia Poised For A Stronger Rebound

The local bourse edged higher for the fourth day, buoyed by gains in MAYBANK and PETGAS. In the US, Wall Street closed mixed, with S&P 500 and Nasdaq posting gains, but the Dow ended lower, as initial jobless claims data came in higher-than-expected. All eyes will be on the nonfarm payrolls later today, which will help Fed determine the path of interest rates ahead. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil dipped towards USD74.3 per barrel following Trump’s renewed pledge on bringing down oil prices, while gold prices retreated marginally from its all-time high, trading around USD2,856 level. Meanwhile, CPO prices regained momentum and broke above the RM4,400 mark.

Sector Focus: Amid the ongoing US-China trade war, we opine that the local Gloves and Technology counters will benefit from the rising tensions. The trade war could also prompt manufacturers to diversify their production bases, further solidifying the China+1 strategy and strengthening Malaysia’s position as a strategic industrial hub, which may benefit the Construction, Building Materials, and Utilities sectors. Lastly, traders can also look into the newly listed solar-related IPO, Northern Solar (M+ TP: RM1.12), which gained 25% on its ACE Market debut yesterday.

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Tech Leads the Rally

The FBM KLCI opened higher today, supported by gains in CIMB and YTL stocks. Market sentiment continues to improve, with most sectors trading in the green, except for REIT and plantation. Technology emerged as the leading mover, rebounding strongly with INARI and MYEG at the forefront, while the construction sector extended its uptrend after its slight pause yesterday. In corporate news, Notion VTec announced a land acquisition worth nearly RM30 million for future expansion. Key events today include BNM international reserves update and the US Non-Farm Payroll report (9:30pm)

As tech stood out as today’s top gainer, investors looking to trade on this bullish sentiment may consider MYEG (Target Price: MYR 1.68) and ITMAX (Target Price: MYR 4.40) for potential trading opportunities. For further details, check the full report on your Maybank Trade MY app today!

M+ Market Update – 10Feb25
New Tariff Threats Could Weigh on Gains

The FBMKLCI ended the week with a five-day winning streak, fuelled by bargain hunting in Banking and Utilities heavyweights. Meanwhile, sentiment in the US weakened due to slowing job growth, despite a declining unemployment rate and stronger wage growth. Additionally, inflationary pressure remained elevated compared to previous month, signalling a slower easing cycle ahead. Also, President Trump is reportedly considering fresh tariffs of 25% on all steel and aluminium imports later today. This week, traders will closely monitor key upcoming data, including (i) Core CPI, (ii) CPI, (iii) Core PPI, (iv) PPI, and (v) retail sales. In the commodities market, Brent Crude closed below USD75 per barrel, while gold prices remained elevated around USD2,860 per ounce. CPO prices surged above RM 4,500.

Sector Focus: The local bourse is set to open lower, following Wall Street’s sell-offs on Friday, as fears of a global trade war intensify amid reports that President Trump could announce an additional 25% tariff to be imposed on steel and aluminium. We believe the stronger dollar outlook, coupled with the ongoing US-China trade tensions, will bode well for the Glove sector. Meanwhile, we believe the Renewable Energy, Construction, and Property sectors will remain on traders' radar, driven by various government initiatives like JSSEZ and NETR.
