M+ Market Update – 14Feb25
Traders May Focus on Earnings Season
The local bourse closed on a negative note, as profit-taking in Banking heavyweights dampened sentiment. While the MoM PPI, points to inflationary pressures, came in hotter-than-anticipated at 0.4%, Wall Street edged higher, buoyed by gains in Nasdaq heavyweights like Nvidia after Hewlett Packard Enterprise shipped its first NVIDIA AI computing Blackwell system. In the commodities market, Brent Crude traded within a tight range around USD 74-75/barrel, amid prospects of Russian-Ukraine peace talks. Gold prices surged toward USD2,928/ounce, while CPO prices took a breather after the recent rebound above RM4,600.
Sector Focus: We see trading opportunities in Gas Malaysia stock after Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli's recent announcement on addressing CapEx challenges in the gas industry. As we approach the reporting season, we expect traders to position themselves in (i) export-oriented sectors like Gloves, which stand to benefit from a strong dollar outlook and ongoing tariffs on China’s products and (ii) Construction and Technology stocks that are tied to the data center supply chain. For a more conservative play, we remain positive on Banking and REITs, supported by Malaysia’s growing economy, increased mall footfall, and high dividend payouts.
Stocks to watch:
Construction: *BNASTRA*, *INTA*, PRTASCO
Healthcare: KAREX, KPJ
Technology: *ITMAX*
Renewable Energy: *KENERGY*
Plantation: TSH
O&G: HAWK
Consumer: RGB

Alibaba Surges on Apple AI Partnership
Alibaba Group (ALIBABA) surged nearly 8.5% on 12 Feb’25, marking its largest gain in almost two years, after announcing a partnership with Apple to develop AI features for iPhones. ALIBABA extended gains by another 2.5% yesterday.
ALIBABA’s Qwen AI model, recognized among the top 10 open-source large language models globally, has fueled optimism that China’s tech sector can remain competitive despite U.S. restrictions on advanced chips, according to The South China Morning Post.
Bullish investors looking to capitalize on the current momentum may consider Call Warrants like ALIBABA-C40, which provides leveraged exposure over ALIBABA for only a fraction of the share price while using a local CDS account!

The FBMKLCI (-0.56%) had a rocky start for the week, mirroring the dampened regional sentiment. The KLCI closed lower at 1,582.76 pts, as key heavyweights like YTLPOWR (-11.0 sen) and PETGAS (-30.0 sen) were some of the obvious laggard on the key index. Market breadth was also negative, with 715 losers against 313 winners. M+ Market Update – 18Feb25
Peace Talks In Focus
The local bourse started the week on a weaker tone, dragged down by the Utilities and Energy heavyweights. Meanwhile, Wall Street was closed for the Presidents’ Day public holiday. Global markets will be watching the peace talks between the US and Russia on ending the war in Ukraine, which will be held in Saudi Arabia this week and attended by top officials from both countries. Also, Walmart and Alibaba are also set to announce their results this week. On China and Hong Kong front, we believe the symposium, attended by most of China’s business leaders, will boost sentiment for China and Hong Kong exchanges. In the commodities market, Brent oil edged up slightly above USD75/barrel. Gold prices maintained near the USD2900 zone, while CPO prices are trading above the RM4,500 level.
Sector Focus: Malaysia recorded a current account expansion in 2024, thanks to robust exports and a resurgence in tourism activities. We believe the tourism sector will remain strong ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, benefiting counters related to aviation, hotels, malls, theme parks and the digital economy. Meanwhile, stronger exports, underpinned by a stronger greenback, and ongoing US-China trade tensions, and sustained demand in AI, will benefit export-oriented sectors like Technology and Gloves.

Market Commentary
Highlights:
Palm settles higher despite weak soyoil, export data
CBOT soybeans gain as traders monitor South American weather
Crude Palm Oil
Malaysian palm oil futures recouped the session's earlier losses to settle higher on Monday, while weakness in soyoil prices and lower palm oil exports estimates for the first two weeks of February capped gains.
The benchmark palm oil contract for May delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 40 ringgit, or 0.89%, to close at 4,539 ringgit ($1,024.14) a metric ton. The contract rose 0.83% on Friday.
At the midday session, crude palm oil futures traded lower due to weakness in soyoil markets and a weaker Malaysian palm oil export performance for the first half of February.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.93%, while its palm oil contract rose 0.58%. The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) is closed for a public holiday.
Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market.
Cargo surveyors estimated Malaysian palm oil exports to have fallen between 12.3% and 19.9%between February 1-15 from a month earlier.
Today's palm oil market is poised to experience a bullish trend, influenced by the stronger Chicago soyoil and firmer crude oil price.
Soybean (Reuters)
Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures rose on Friday as traders monitored parched weather in Argentina, a major soy producer.
CBOT March soybeans settled up 6 cents to $10.36 per bushel.
CBOT March soymeal ended up $3.2 to $295.90 per short ton.
March soyoil fell 0.18 cent to 46.07 cents per pound.
Soy futures were broadly supported by an easing dollar and investor relief that U.S. President Donald Trump did not immediately impose reciprocal tariffs globally, analysts said.
A powerful Brazilian soy grower lobby is recommending farmers reject the inclusion in soy purchase and sale contracts of the obligation to comply with the European Union anti-deforestation law, according to a statement on Friday.
Weekly U.S. soybean exports were below expectations but the absence of more U.S. tariffs tempered concerns about full-blown trade conflict with top soybean importer China.
On Thursday, Brazil's crop agency Conab lowered its soybean supply forecast in the world's top supplier due to dry weather in the south, but raised corn estimates.

Looking ahead, JPG highlighted that palm oil production will be largely influenced by weather conditions, biodiesel mandates, and global geopolitical developments.
