M+ Market Update – 28Feb25
Back To Defensive Trades

The local bourse closed lower as sentiment was dampened by weaknesses in Petronas related stocks, coupled with uncertainties surrounding its domestic CapEx outlook. Wall Street ended in red after selling pressure emerged despite Nvidia posting better-than-expected results. We believe the change on mind by President Trump on tariffs threat toward Canada and Mexico, set to take effect on March 4, coupled with a rise in unemployment claims to 242k, highest level in 3 months will contribute to further weakness on the stock markets. On the commodities market, Brent crude rebounded towards USD73 per barrel, while Gold closed below the USD2,880 mark. Meanwhile CPO price hover around RM4,530.

Sector Focus: Given the renewed selling pressure on Wall Street despite Nvidia’s earnings beat, we expect upside in the local Technology sector to be limited, albeit supported by stronger earnings from NationGate. We also favour ITMAX and FRONTKN for long term growth after their solid earnings reports. Meanwhile, we see trading opportunities in Kelington Group due to its (i) RM1.27bn order book, (ii) UHP segment expansion in China and Europe, and (iii) potential data center order replenishment. Besides, we remain positive on Banking, backed by RHB earnings and attractive dividend yield and REITs for their defensive characteristics.
