Finding Resilience Amidst Uncertainty

• Although President Trump's protectionist policies have been affecting market sentiment and creating significant volatility, the overall market has been positioning for an eventual easing of trade tensions, which has pushed Wall Street to greater heights. The next major event that traders are watching is the timing of the Federal Reserve's interest rate reduction.
• Closer to home, we believe investors will look for a domestic "hideout" strategy, given the stronger ringgit. Key catalysts that traders will be monitoring include (i) the adoption of AI and the rising demand for DC, (ii) solid demand for power and electricity, coupled with the NETR masterplan, and (iii) the return of foreign funds.
• We favour selected stocks in the Technology, Utilities, Construction, Renewable Energy, and Industrial Products sectors, as well as several conglomerates.

Jobs Data Buoyed The Sentiment

US: Risk-on sentiment persisted on Wall Street, buoyed by (i) stronger-than-anticipated jobs growth, and (ii) healthy progress towards de-escalating of trade tension following the US-Vietnam trade deal. That said, we believe the robust jobs data could keep the greenback under pressure, particularly with the impending “Big Beautiful Bill” expected to widen the US deficit further. Even so, continued progress on trade de-escalation should serve as a near-term catalyst for US equities; do note the 90-day pause will end next week. In the commodities space, Brent crude, gold, and CPO eased to USD68/bbl, USD3,336/oz, and RM4,078/MT, respectively.

MY: Following a positive lead from Wall Street, driven by persistent buying interest in the tech stocks after the de-escalation of the US-Vietnam trade deal, coupled with the return of foreign funds over the past week, we believe the local bourse may trade on a firmer footing for the session. We anticipate the resumption of data center theme could lead to more positive trading activity within the Technology and Telco sectors, where TM has recently experienced a breakout move. For a more conservative play, we like IBGREIT and SUNREIT, given the active asset acquisitions activities and sustained interest in the sector. Meanwhile, MRDIY, 99SMART, and ECOSHOP could remain as traders’ focus in a view of high inflationary environment.

“Big, Beautiful Bill” and Reciprocal Tariffs In Focus

US: Last Thursday, S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached all-time highs and Wall Street was closed on Friday for Independence Day. President Trump signed the “Big, Beautiful Bill”, which includes a sweeping package of tax cuts and increased spending on US military defense. Although the tax cuts are expected to benefit manufacturers and stimulate economic growth, economists raised concerns that it may widen the US fiscal deficit and add to the already-massive $36.2tn national debt. The US futures are negative as Trump tariffs will go into effect on August 1st for countries without deals. In the commodities space, Brent crude and gold continued to hover around USD68/bbl and USD3,336/oz respectively, while CPO eased further RM4,062/MT.

MY: With Wall Street’s negative index futures and the July 9 reciprocal tariffs deadline looming, coupled with US plans to restrict AI chip shipments to Malaysia and Thailand, we expect the local bourse to start the week on a cautious note. Still, the return of foreign funds and the FBMKLCI’s undervaluation may cushion the downside risk for now, supported by the data centre theme, domestic-driven plays and anticipation of major infrastructure projects rollout. We remain bullish on the Construction and Utility sectors, while REITs like IGBREIT and SUNREIT may continue to benefit should BNM lower the OPR in the upcoming MPC meeting.

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Tariff Tensions Linger

The local bourse started the week on a weaker note, likely reflecting market confusion over the shifting US tariff timeline. While the original 90-day pause was set to end on 9 July, recent news indicates it has been extended to 1 August. Market sentiment remained bearish, with all indices in the red. Technology led the decline, followed by construction. Even industrials and property, which rallied for nine consecutive sessions, failed to maintain momentum. A key event this week is BNM's monetary policy decision, scheduled for Wednesday at 3PM.

Amid the sea of red, trading opportunities may still arise. Today’s Traders’ Almanac highlights FPI (Estimated Resistance: MYR 1.88; Stop Loss: MYR 1.39) and HAWK (Estimated Resistance: MYR 0.625; Stop Loss: MYR 0.460) as potential BUYs. FBM KLCI: 1,537.54 pts (-12.65pts, -0.82%)
In line with the poor regional market performance, the FBMKLCI (-0.82%) started the week lower at 1,537.54 pts, dragged by losses in YTLPOWR (-21.0 sen) and TENAGA (-26.0 sen). This came after the news that the US government planned to restrict certain NVIDIA chips to Malaysia and Thailand, with the aim to curb chip exports to China, causing Asian markets to trade broadly negative. Back home, market breadth was negative, with 754 losers against 260 winners. All the sectors also ended the day in red, with the Technology (-2.15%) sector performing the worst.

M+ Global Market Update – 08Jul25
Sentiment Sours As Trade Tensions Resurface

US: Wall Street fell sharply as global trade war concerns reignited after President Trump announced a 25% tariff on Japanese and South Korean goods starting August 1, while Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, South Africa and Kazakhstan were also hit with new tariffs. Also, BRICS nations may face added levies for “anti-American practices”. Thus, we believe market will stay cautious due to the current trade war developments and traders will focus on the upcoming Fed minutes, to get clarity on future rate direction. In the commodities space, gold remained at USD3,336/oz, while Brent crude and CPO traded higher at USD69/bbl and RM4,071/MT respectively.

MY: With President Trump imposing a 25% tariff on Malaysia starting August 1, coupled with his threat to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries aligning with BRICS, we expect the local bourse to trade on a broadly negative tone. However, we believe the market may shift to more defensive and domestic-driven stocks like 99SMART and MRDIY. Meanwhile, as TENAGA faces additional taxes from LHDN, the recent plunge could be seen as a buy-on-dip opportunity, given TENAGA’s continued expansion of power grids, riding DC and RE developments. The Bloomberg consensus target stands at RM16.28, implying an 18.0% upside. Also, investors can look into the upcoming IPO Enproserve (M+ Global TP: RM0.31) that is closing today.

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Tariff Pressure Mounts

The FBM KLCI continued its downtrend this morning, weighed down by concerns following the latest US tariff announcement, which included a revised tariff rate for Malaysia. Adding to the cautious tone, Malaysia now faces renewed US trade risks, as countries linked to the BRICS alliance could be hit with an additional 10% tariff. After yesterday’s sea of red a few sectors managed to rebound, particularly healthcare, followed by REITs. In contrast, the technology sector extended its downtrend due to the ongoing tariff narrative and dragged down further by INARI.

With REITs gaining momentum, investors may consider IGBREIT (Target Price: MYR 2.56), PAVREIT (Target Price: MYR 1.83), and SUNREIT (Target Price: MYR 2.13) as potential trading opportunities.
