M+ Global Market Update – 04Aug25
13MP Drives AI and Green Energy Tailwinds
US: Friday’s session saw Wall Street decline sharply, as the Trump administration imposed sweeping reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries following its August 1 deadline, including a 35% tariff on Canadian imports. The volatility was intensified by a disappointing jobs report, with July’s nonfarm payrolls recorded at 73k, way below expectations of 110k. Investors rushed into safe havens like bonds and gold, with 10Y Treasury yields dropping toward 4.2%, while gold rallied toward USD3,363/oz. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil traded lower at USD69.7/bbl, while CPO rebounded toward RM4,245/MT.
MY: Tracking Wall Street’s sell-down last Friday, the local bourse might kickstart the week on a softer note. However, given that the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) charts strong emphasis on AI development, green energy and digital transformation, we continue to remain bullish toward the utilities, construction, telecommunication and renewable energy sectors, with some of our top picks include YTLPOWR, GAMUDA, TIMECOM, GASMSIA and SLVEST. Lastly, with ITMAX’s 70%-owned unit, Selmax Sdn Bhd, securing a 10-year contract from the Subang Jaya City Council under the Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP) system, coupled with other contracts won in Johor and Penang, we continue to favour ITMAX as a strong fundamental stock pick.

M+ Global Market Update – 05Aug25
Wall Street’s Recovery May Lift Local Sentiment
US: Wall Street rebounded on renewed Fed rate cut bets, as softer jobs data raised the odds of a September rate cut to over 80%, despite lingering concerns after Trump’s dismissal of the US statistics chief. Tech stocks led the gains, suppIGBorted by continued momentum in Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta, while earnings from AMD, Caterpillar, DVisney, and McDonald’s will be a key focus ahead amid sustained AI optimism. Meanwhile, investors will also look at the ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI for July later today. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil retreated further toward USD68.8/bbl as OPEC increased production, while gold saw an increase toward USD3,373.6/oz. Meanwhile, the CPO price is trading at RM4,187/MT.
MY: Tracking the overnight US recovery, we believe the local bourse may trade on a positive note. We favour the technology sector, as the OPR cut and anticipated Fed rate easing are expected to lower borrowing costs for technology companies. Malaysian tech players remain exempted from US tariffs, with our top picks including FRONTKEN, VITROX and EG. Meanwhile, SUNLOGY’s rally yesterday may spur spillover interest in other solar-related counters, supported by positive developments in the renewable energy space, including NETR and the 13MP. Lastly, investors may shift their attention to REITs for domestic-focused exposure.

Construction: CBHB, *HEGROUP*, INTA
Utility: KJTS, SUNLOGY

M+ Global Market Update – 06Aug25
US Services Slowdown Dragged Sentiment
US: Wall Street slipped as US services activity contracted in July to 50.1, compared to 51.5 expected and 50.8 in June, raising concerns over economic momentum despite growing rate cut expectations. The softer ISM reading, alongside last week’s weak payrolls and recent Fed commentary, reinforced the case for a September cut. On the corporate front, Palantir surged after posting record quarterly revenue, driven by strong AI-related demand from government and enterprise clients. Meanwhile, investors also digested a narrower June trade deficit, down 16% MoM to USD60.2bn. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil traded lower at USD67.6/bbl, while gold and CPO traded higher at USD3,380.6/oz and RM4,290/MT respectively.
MY: Following the dip in the US, we believe the local bourse will turn slightly cautious today. Meanwhile, with the strong emphasis on AI development, green energy, and digital transformation under the 13MP, we continue to stay bullish toward the utilities, construction, telecommunication, and renewable energy sectors, with stocks like YTLPOWR, TENAGA, IJM, TIMECOM, GASMSIA, and SLVEST remaining as the picks within these segments. Lastly, for a more defensive approach, investors may start accumulating banking stocks, capitalising on their attractive dividends for long-term investment purposes.

M+ Global Market Update – 07Aug25
US Imposing Chips and Semiconductor Tariffs
US: Wall Street closed higher as Apple surged over 5% on plans to boost US manufacturing investment by another USD100bn, lifting the tech sentiment. Strong earnings momentum also supported gains, with over 80% of reporting companies beating estimates. However, economic worries linger as the services data and rising input costs fuel stagflation fears, keeping rate cut expectations intact. Also, as President Trump is imposing 100% tariff on chips and semiconductors, we expect market to be volatile today. In the commodities market, Brent crude, gold and CPO all traded lower at USD66.9/bbl, USD3,369.3/oz and RM4,267/MT respectively.
MY: Despite the recovery in the US, coupled with the rate cut expectation in September, we expect market to stay cautious after President Trump plan to impose 100% tariff imported chips. However, sector wise, the Construction and Utilities sectors should be benefiting from the data centre developments and mega infrastructure projects in the country, while the recent OPR cut may boost the interest for REIT and Property sectors; such as SUNREIT, IGBREIT, and ECOWLD. Lastly, despite the sell-down in the Healthcare sector, we favour KPJ due to its brownfield expansion and the opening of new hospitals. KPJ has experienced a breakout continuation pattern, with a consensus target price of RM2.98.
Stocks to watch:
Utility: *GASMSIA*, MALAKOF, PETDAG, *PETGAS*
Property: *ECOWLD*, *LBS *
Construction: PESONA, *PWRWELL*
Consumer: *99SMART*
Technology: FRONTKN
