Great initiative.

Nearly 5 years ago, I penned an article “Can Ecumenical Unity Save Ethiopia?”

Now it seems that my wish is coming true. Ethiopia Orthodox Church, Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus and Ethiopian Catholic Church have joined to launch a new joint ecumenical council.

I wish the best for the new council.

Incarnational friendship and God's ‘stupid heart’

One of the things I am grateful about last year is the fact that God brought so many amazing people to my life. Good friends. Great friends. Sometimes even more than friends.

What I realized, however, is that maintaining the people God has given you is not as easy as we think it is. And do you know what is painful? To start a new one after leaving the other. It's painful and dreadful.

In light of this, I see the Christmas story as God trying to befriend us, His moral creatures. We are relational beings as much as He is. He wanted to make us friends. He took flesh and came. The God of the universe called fellow human beings as his friends. (John 15:15)

His friendship is incarnational. He became what we are - to tell us that loves us and cares for us. He became our neighbor to share meal with us. We celebrate His birthday and He celebrates the day we were born again.

But His friendship is even more amazing. He does not quit nor He gives up. For those who quit in the middle of the friendship, He calls them back to His arms. His is madly in love with His friends.

He has a ‘stupid heart’ as in the song by the band named ‘Walk off the Earth’. No matter what, He couldn't let us go. He comes back even after we decided to leave Him for good. He journeys miles with us, and sometimes searching for us. Even when it is painful for us to stick with him throughout the journey, He shares the pain. He even took the pain - to befriend us, here and ever after.

May His incarnational friendship be our model to rebuild lost friendships and relationships, and to create new ones.
