A nice range radius to hold USFK HQ at Pyeongtaek and the THAAD/TPY-2 in Gyeongsangbuk-do at risk. (Pyeongtaek considerably further north.) https://t.co/J7ZKh9SEv9

Interesting ... the South Korean government “was aware of North Korea’s missile launch related movements prior to the launch,” a Presidential Blue House spokesperson Han Jung-woo said in a written statement distributed to the press.

#BREAKING: One of the missiles launched by North Korea overnight flew 690km and appear to be a new design- South Korea Military

Ok. I’ll bite. Let’s see the smiling Kim pics. https://t.co/2iTJjkj17u

*If* this is a new missile, the good news is we’ll certainly get a good amount of pictures from North Korea. It’d also really punch up the qualitative opportunity costs of dragging out diplomacy with Kim Jong Un.

@ferencdv *If* the missile is indeed dual-capable, the two ranges demonstrated today (with identical apogees) may emulate a heavier conventional payload and a somewhat lower-mass nuclear payload. That’d be a *very* bad development.

@ferencdv Aside: given the Iskander-M similarities of this missile and the longstanding rumors within NATO of the 9M723 having a 500 km+ range capability, this test becomes even more interesting. I’m getting impatient for images now.

New: South Korean military says it sees North Korea’s launch on Thursday as “a new type of short-range missile launch.” Spox says first missile reached approximately 430km & the second missile reached approximately 690km. See @ajmount analysis on why distance…

@ferencdv Yonhap cites a ROK officially implying that both missiles launched from the same TEL—so it’s looking likelier that we’re just about to learn more about the characteristics of the KN23.

New type of missile or extended range KN-23? South Korea says one of the two missiles flew 690 well farther then prior range of past KN-23 tests https://t.co/MwCQMvv4JC

with 690 range this would put all of ROK in range even fired from Wonsan

@ferencdv @ArmsControlWonk If you were curious: 690 km from the Hodo Peninsula mapped, with Japan’s EEZ added for good measure.
