As you may have noticed, we recently experienced unusual behavior that disrupted the blockchain. While the network is currently running, some unexpected issues, such as clock synchronization, are still occurring.
After a thorough investigation, we found evidence suggesting this was a deliberate attack. The attackers attempted to flood the network with spam transactions and execute a replay attack.
Findings:
The consumption fee model and rate-limit approach successfully mitigated spam transactions, preventing disruption to the network or consensus algorithm. Importantly, all data and assets remain safe despite the ongoing attack.
However, a sophisticated replay attack caused a flood of messages from past blocks, leading to repeated halts earlier and ongoing disruptions.
From the logs, we identified numerous validators who submitted double proposals. In other blockchains, submitting even one double proposal can result in the validator's assets being frozen.
Proposed Action Plan:
To protect the network and community, we propose freezing the stakes of validators who submitted multiple double proposals during the attack. While the exact threshold will be finalized after discussion, this action is critical to safeguard the network.
