How to Explain Your PhD Research Proposal in an Interview😍🥳😁

1.
Title of Your Research

-Start by clearly saying your research title.
-It should give an idea of what your study is about.

Example
: “My research is titled ‘The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health Among Teenagers in Urban India.’”

2.
Why Your Research is Important (Significance)

-Explain why this topic matters in the real world or in your academic field.

Talk about:

-How this study can help people, society, or a specific industry.
-Why it will still matter in the future (future relevance).
-Any new problems or trends your study is responding to.

Example
: “Mental health issues are rising among teens, and social media might be one reason. My study will help schools and parents understand this better.”

3.
What Has Been Done Before (Past Work)

*Talk about the main studies or authors who have already worked on your topic.

-What did they find? What did they miss?
-Say clearly what gap you found – something they didn’t study or didn’t study well.

Example
: “Many studies show social media can affect sleep or self-esteem, but not much research focuses on teenagers in India. That’s the gap I want to fill.”

4. Your Research Question(s)

-Say the main question your research will answer.
-You can also include smaller questions or objectives.

Example
:
“Main Question: How does using social media affect mental health in teenagers?”

“
Objective
: To study changes in anxiety and depression related to time spent online.”

-Write the report (Month 6)

6.
Methodology (How You’ll Do the Study)

Say if your study is:

1. Quantitative (numbers, surveys)
2. Qualitative (interviews, opinions)
3. Or both (mixed)

Talk about
:
- Who you will study (age group, location, etc.)
-How you’ll collect data (surveys, interviews, etc.)
-How you’ll analyze the data (what tools or software)

Example
:
“I’ll do a survey of 200 school students aged 13–18 and use SPSS to analyze the results.”

7.
Where You Will Do It (Research Area)

-Mention your research location or group.
-Say why it’s a good place to study this problem.

Example
: “I’m focusing on urban schools in Delhi because social media use is high there.”

8.
Which Theory Guides Your Study (Theoretical Framework)

- If you’re using a theory, name it and explain simply how it helps your research.

Example
: “I’m using the ‘Uses and Gratifications Theory’ which helps me understand why teens use social media.”

9. Ethics (Doing Research Responsibly)

*Explain how you will protect people in your study:

1. Take their permission
2. Keep their data private
3. Follow university rules

10.
What You Expect to Find (Expected Results)

-Say what kind of result you think you might get.
-Explain how your work will help others (students, researchers, policymakers, etc.)

11.
Challenges (Limitations)

*Mention possible problems you may face:

-Finding enough participants
- Time issues
-Show that you've thought about dealing with them.

12. References

- Know the main authors in your topic area.
-Be ready to talk about their work if the panel asks.
