yAB is the mole fraction of the solute A in the bulk of gas phase

xAB is the mole fraction of the solute A in the bulk of liquid phase

Difference between yAB and xAB is the overall driving force

But one of the mole fraction is in gas domain and other mole fraction is in liquid domain, therefore the difference mathematically is not valid.

Overall driving force can be defined conceptually but mathematically difference between the mole fractions of the two different domain is not valid.

In order to solve this problem, Lewis and whitman, introduced the concept of interfacial concentrations.

They Introduced xAi at the interface on the liquid domain and yAi at the interface on the gas domain.

In this way, instead of defining the overall driving force, they defined individual driving forces.

yAB - yAi is the individual gas side driving force responsible for the movement of the solute A from the bulk of gas phase to the gas liquid interface.

xAi - xAB is the individual driving force on the liquid side which is responsible for the movement of solute A from the gas liquid interface towards the liquid bulk.
Steps in the film theory

1. Mass transfer of the solute A takes place from the bulk of gas phase to the gas liquid interface due to a driving force
(yAB - yAi)
Flux for this case can be defined as driving force multiplied by the mass transfer coefficient expressed in the gas side.
NA = ky (yAB - yAi)

2. Solute A when reaches to the gas liquid interface on the gas side diffuses within the interface towards the liquid side.

As equilibrium exist at the gas liquid interface there for the amount of A transport across the interface will be same but as we defining the two different mole fractions in different domains that's why there mathematical value maybe different.

We define the relationship between yAi and xAi in terms of a linear relationship.
yAi = k xAi

3. Finally the solute present at the gas liquid interface towards the liquid side, reaches the bulk of the liquid phase with the help of a driving force (xAi - xAB).

Flux for this case, can be similarly defined as
NA = kx (xAi - xAB).
NAG is defined as the mass transfer flux for the gas side

NAL is defined as the mass transfer flux for the liquid side

In case of steady state, both the fluxes are equal. It means the number of moles that diffuses from the gas bulk to the interface will be same as the number of moles that will diffuse from the gas liquid interface towards the liquid bulk.

It does not depend upon the value of distribution coefficient that relates the interfacial concentration. For all the three different representations
yAi = xAi
yAi > xAi
yAi < xAi
The fluxes on both the side remains the same.

These different representations are because of the difference in the gas phase number of moles and the liquid phase number of moles.

The value of xAi depends upon the number of moles of liquids side and the value of yAi depends upon the number of moles of the gas side.
When both are different, then the values of xAi and yAi are also different and hence, they are represent differently on the diagram.

As long as the steady state prevails, fluxes on both the sides are equal.
