Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell drew a stark picture of a labor market that looks fine on the surface—4.3% unemployment, solid consumer spending—but is quietly losing momentum underneath. Once you adjust for statistical overcounting in the payroll data, he said during a press conference Wednesday following the FOMC meeting, “job creation is pretty close to zero.”
He connected that slowdown, at least in part, to what CEOs are now openly telling investors: AI allows them to do more with fewer people.
He noted “a significant number of companies” have recently announced layoffs or hiring pauses, with many of them explicitly citing AI as the reason.
“Much of the time they’re talking about AI and what it can do,” Powell told reporters after the Fed’s rate-cut decision, warning large employers are signaling they won’t need to add headcount for years. “We’re watching that very carefully,” he added.
The comments come as the Fed cut interest rates by a quarter point to a range of 3.75%–4%, citing “downside risks to employment” even as inflation remains elevated. Powell said the U.S. economy is still expanding at a “moderate pace,” even as hiring slows. He described that spending as one of the “big sources of growth in the economy,” driven by companies building data centers and other equipment tied to artificial intelligence.
Powell also pushed back on the idea that all that spending is amounting to another speculative bubble. He drew a clear line between today’s surge in capital expenditure and the dot-com era, noting “these companies actually have earnings.” Those projects, he said, aren’t especially sensitive to interest rates, though, since they reflect long-term bets on higher productivity.
At the same time, Powell emphasized the boom creates a policy dilemma for the Fed. AI and automation are boosting output, but they’re also allowing companies to do more with fewer workers, leaving the labor market softer, even while GDP stays positive.
“We have upside risks to inflation, downside risks to employment,” he said. “This is a very difficult thing for a central bank, because one of those calls for rates to be lower, one calls for rates to be higher.”
A bifurcated market
Recent corporate announcements illustrate Powell’s warning. Amazon announced this week it laid off 14,000 middle managers—about 4% of its white-collar workforcein an effort to “remove organizational layers.” The layoffs come amid their rampant investments into AI. Target, Paramount, and other large firms followed with their own cuts.
According to a Challenger, Gray & Christmas report, U.S. employers have announced nearly 946,000 layoffs so far this year—the highest total since 2020—with more than 17,000 explicitly tied to AI and another 20,000 to automation.
“Job creation is very low, and the job-finding rate for people who are unemployed is very low,” Powell said. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/jerome-powell-says-ai-hiring-163037152.html

Jerome Powell says the AI hiring apocalypse is real: ‘Job creation is pretty close to zero’
Powell said the Fed is walking a tightrope as AI-fueled investment props up growth but erodes hiring.
La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven was struck and killed by a vehicle on Oct. 20. (La Mesa Police Department)
It’s unknown whether self-proclaimed “entertainment professional” David Pearce knew the fate of the women he was prosecuted for drugging and raping over a 14-year period.
What is certain, however, is that one of those women — who transformed her sexual assault trauma into a service career — wasn’t there to witness his sentencing.
Pearce was handed a 146-year prison sentence Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles County Superior Court after being convicted of first-degree murder for the overdose deaths of model Christy Giles and architect Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola, as well as the rapes of seven other women from 2007 to 2021.
Among Pearce's victims was La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven, according to the L.A. County district attorney's office. The 25-year-old officer was struck and killed by a vehicle on the 8 Freeway near San Diego on Oct. 20.
The New York Post first reported her connection to the case.

Craven was helping motorists involved in a traffic collision when she was fatally struck. One of those individuals also was killed by the same driver. A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Craven was honored with a funeral procession from San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium to Skyline Church in Rancho San Diego on Tuesday.
The L.A. County district attorney’s office did not confirm any details other than that Pearce was accused of sexually assaulting Craven in February 2020.
“Somebody dropped something in her drink, and then when she was unconscious, applied IV drugs and kept her for a day and a half,” her father, David Craven, told NBC 7 San Diego.

Afterward, “she decided right then and there, ‘I’m going to become a police officer,’” he told the outlet.
At the time, Craven was a student at Loyola Marymount University. She graduated in 2023, entered the police academy and joined the La Mesa Police Department in February 2024. https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/socal-cop-among-hollywood-producers-222643693.html

Job-seekers complain about “ghost jobs,” five rounds of interviews, and tedious skills tests—but even major leaders are not exempt from the ordeal. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was put through nine interviews and a trick question before securing an SVP product manager role at the $3.4 trillion company. Likewise, former U.S. vice president Kamala Harris has just revealed the intense process she went through to land the coveted White House job.
“When I was being vetted for vice president, I had a nine-hour interview with a lawyer going through everything,” Harris recalled recently on the Diary of a CEO podcast. “My taxes, my professional record, everything.”
Harris undoubtedly had the professional chops to take on the job. She served as the district attorney of San Francisco for two terms, as well as the attorney general of California for six years, and a U.S. senator of the Golden State for four. She made history in the Bay Area as the first woman elected to the role of San Francisco DA, and the first female, Black, and South Asian attorney general in the state’s history. With decades of governmental experience under her belt, she ticked all the boxes to become the 49th vice president—but the selection process went well beyond credentials.
“Having been in the position of both being the interviewer and the interviewee, it really as much as anything comes down to chemistry,” Harris explained. “Because by the time that that interview is happening, it’s usually narrowed down to about three people. So all the vetting has been done.
“Then it’s about sitting down and just deciding, because it is going to be a partnership,” she continued. “And it has to be where you feel that you can trust someone, you could work with them, you’re doing it for the same reasons.”
Whenever she wins or loses, she gets ‘gold medal depression’
Of course, Harris got the job. But she soon realized that even winning can come with its own emptiness—or “gold medal depression.” A post-competition feeling of depression, anxiety, and emptiness after major career events, that sinks in regardless of the outcome.
The last time she experienced it was when she went head-to-head against Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, with less than four months to campaign. The vice president had a lot of catching up to do with lost time, racing around the country for campaign visits, prepping for heated debates, and trying to drum up enthusiasm among a deflated supporter base. When she wound up losing to now-President Trump, the gold medal depression kicked in.
“It lasted for days,” Harris said, likening the loss to a “phantom limb.” “I had a hard time reconciling [that] we can’t still do something about it.”
But it wasn’t the first time she experienced this. She explained that the adrenaline from high-stakes milestones keeps running even after these big events end, leaving a sudden void once the intensity stops—even when she wins. Just like CEOs and founders who say they felt empty after achieving an IPO.
“Your body is physically used to this thing that all of a sudden stops, and I’ve had that happen every time I’ve run and [won],” Harris said. “Because you’ve been functioning the whole time in a very competitive nature, and it’s fight or flight, and it’s adrenaline surging, surging, surging.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/former-vp-kamala-harris-says-152344141.html

Laptop shopping can be overwhelming, but we've got you. (Maskot via Getty Images)
My first job out of college was at the Apple Store. When I wasn't teaching classes on how to edit photos and videos, I was helping customers figure out what laptop was right for them. Buying a laptop can be a big deal: You're shelling out hundreds, maybe even thousands, for something you're likely to use almost every day for the next several years, so it's important to get it right. That said, it doesn't have to be a decision that keeps you up at night. Follow these tips and you'll be well on your way to finding the laptops of your dreams (or at least avoiding the one of your nightmares). https://tech.yahoo.com/computing/article/heres-what-to-know-before-buying-a-laptop-according-to-a-tech-pro-171718054.html

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump’s request to add a documentary proof of citizenship requirement to the federal voter registration form cannot be enforced, a federal judge ruled Friday.
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C., sided with Democratic and civil rights groups that sued the Trump administration over his executive order to overhaul U.S. elections.
She ruled that the proof-of-citizenship directive is an unconstitutional violation of the separation of powers, dealing a blow to the administration and its allies who have argued that such a mandate is necessary to restore public confidence that only Americans are voting in U.S. elections.
“Because our Constitution assigns responsibility for election regulation to the States and to Congress, this Court holds that the President lacks the authority to direct such changes,” Kollar-Kotelly wrote in her opinion.
She further emphasized that on matters related to setting qualifications for voting and regulating federal election procedures “the Constitution assigns no direct role to the President in either domain.”
Kollar-Kotelly echoed comments she made when she granted a preliminary injunction over the issue.
The ruling grants the plaintiffs a partial summary judgment that prohibits the proof-of-citizenship requirement from going into effect. It says the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, which has been considering adding the requirement to the federal voter form, is permanently barred from taking action to do so.
In a statement, Sophia Lin Lakin of the ACLU, one of the plaintiffs in the case, called the ruling “a clear victory for our democracy. President Trump’s attempt to impose a documentary proof of citizenship requirement on the federal voter registration form is an unconstitutional power grab.”
The White House disagreed with the judge's ruling in a statement late Friday.
“President Trump has exercised his lawful authority to ensure only American citizens are casting ballots in American elections,” said Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson. “This is so commonsense that only the Democrat Party would file a lawsuit against it. We expect to be vindicated by a higher court.”
While a top priority for Republicans, attempts to implement documentary proof-of-citizenship requirements for voting have been fraught. The U.S. House passed a citizenship mandate last spring that has stalled in the Senate, and several attempts to pass similar legislation in the states have proved equally difficult.
Such requirements have created problems and confusion for voters when they have taken effect at the state level. It presents particular hurdles for married women who have changed their name, since they might need to show birth certificates and marriage certificates as well as state IDs. Those complications arose earlier this year when a proof-of-citizenship requirement took effect for the first time during local elections in New Hampshire. https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/federal-judge-rules-trump-t-203801490.html
