Albisola Superiore / 3S studio
Environmental redevelopment of the former railway site

 Architects: 3S studio + voarino cairo voarino
 Location: Albisola Superiore (SV), Italy
 Category: Refurbishment
 Project Team: 3S studio Silvia Dagna, Serena Galassi, Simona Maurone associated architects + voarino cairo voarino, + CAIRE cooperative architects and engineers, L. Villa
 Client: Albisola Superiore (Savona)
 Project Year: 2011
 PAI Award 2012_Category structures, infrastructures and technological systems

The redevelopment of the disused headquarters of the FFSS headquarters in Albisola Superiore, in the eastern part of the municipal area, can be summarized, in the methodology that inspired its implementation in some general logics that led to the design choices and that better illustrate them the motivations. These can be briefly summarized as follows: • Give continuity to the pedestrian paths • Increase the usability of the coastal stretch • Reversibility of the interventions • Materials with low environmental impact • Increase in the public green and requalification of the existing one • Compatible tourism development (imagine the forms of new uses that suggest new uses, but that protect existing environmental value situations) The construction of the walk consisted of: • new pavement of the railway track; • construction of cantilevered deck to form a panoramic terrace; • formation of sea side protection at the embankment; • realization of structural crowning inside the tunnel; • upstream escarpment protection; • construction of new public lighting, landscaping, urban furniture. Walk and Terrace: as per the prescriptions given by the Liguria Region during the conference of the deliberating services, a transparent / neutral resin conglomerate with colored crushed stone aggregates was laid, the color of which integrates with the new walk adjacent and continuity 'to the project area with the edges left natural. The intent is to try to preserve the naturalistic character of the place without transforming it into an "urban" walk, thus distorting the identity of an area that for a strange paradox has been preserved precisely from being left in a state of semi-abandonment for 40 years. A secondary wooden path at an altitude of –30 cm with respect to the main one, on the sea side, constitutes a panoramic terrace which widens the section of the existing promenade and frees the view of the landscape. Protection at sea: the breakwater reef existing between the end of the Torre tunnel and the promontory of the "Buco del prete" has been reflowered by laying fourth category natural boulders. The aim of the intervention is to preserve the stone masonry of the nineteenth-century railway ballast from the violent storms of the libeccio and sirocco wind, which currently has subsidence and collapses located in correspondence with the voids caused by the waves. The railway tunnel: it was partly covered in brick, and partly with exposed rock. Different operating typologies were therefore identified for the interventions to be carried out in the tunnel. The part covered in brick, discreetly preserved, has undergone a consolidation and re-stitching of the face, the part with exposed rock, with problems related to safety and stability, it led to the design of a steel structure consisting of COR-TEN ribs that covered the internal part and constituted a support for it. The frame made was then covered with panels always in COR-TEN steel, with the function, as well as being aesthetic, of protection from falling material, and of conveying to the edges of the waters coming from the vault. Upstream protection: after extensive cleaning and stripping of the inconsistent parts, in the section between the end of the Torre Gallery and the promontory, the existing network with elastic rockfall barriers placed on the head of the existing retaining wall, made with mounted metal mesh, was replaced on metal profile supports with horizontal reinforcing ropes.
—————————
3S Studio has designed an "urban" walk without distorting the identity of an area which, for a strange paradox, has been maintained by being in a state of semi-abandonment for 40 years. The general objectives of the design , relating to the general themes were:

Give continuity to pedestrian paths
Increase the usability of the coastal stretch
Intervention reversibility
Low environmental impact materials
Increase in public green spaces and requalification of existing ones
Compatible tourism development "
————————————-
The cost per square meter (true evaluation parameter of public space projects) was very limited in the face of the complex interventions (including structural and concerning works at sea) subject to constraint, of the great final environmental quality.
All this is the result of the design strategies that have always privileged the real change of the boundary conditions, the activation of virtuous circles and the overall vision.
The materials usually used, simple but "safe", are the confirmation of how much the complexity / articulation of the spaces and the real usability of the new structures have been preferred over the decoration and richness of the finishes. They have thus obtainedimportant results in terms of:

extension of the project area
achievement of initially unforeseen results - effects on economic and tourist activities - environmental requalification
creation of new routes (such as that of the tunnel, previously inaccessible).
