Federal COVID loan repayments could put St. Clair West store out of business: owner

"The federal program offered up to $60,000 in interest-free loans to help businesses and non-profits survive government shutdowns.

According to statistics from a CFIB survey, conducted in September, only 34 per cent of businesses say they are able to pay off their CEBA loan by Jan. 18, 2024. That’s when the deadline is to save the loan’s forgivable portion, which can be up to $20,000.

Over half say they question if they can stay in business if they don’t get the forgivable portion. Over 360,000 Ontario businesses received CEBA loans during the pandemic, but a significant 61 per cent are still carrying an average of $134,000 of COVID-related debt.

Julie Kwiecinski, director of provincial affairs for Ontario at the CFIB, said many small business are still recovering and in the same place as Klopp.

“I think we need to remember why this CEBA loan was taken out. This was a lifeline during COVID. Businesses obviously didn’t want to be put in the situation, but the government closed them – on and off again closures, that was very challenging.”

She said restaurants in Toronto, which were closed for over 400 days to indoor dining, is another example."

'Excess mortality and Covid vaccination: is there a correlation?'

"A comprehensive comparative research analysis has found that Covid vaccines are directly associated with the disturbing rise in the mortality rate among countries of the Southern Hemisphere.
Denis Rancourt is a former professor of physics at the University of Ottawa. Maurine Baudin has a PhD in microbiology from the Université Paris Sud (Paris XI). Joseph Hickey is a data research scientist with a PhD in Physics. Jérémie Mercier is a chemist and health educator with a PhD in environmental research. Together these researchers have recently produced an empirical research paper entitled Covid vaccine-associated mortality in the Southern Hemisphere.

17 countries were studied by these researchers: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Malaysia, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Suriname, Thailand, and Uruguay). Together these countries comprise 9.10 per cent of worldwide population and 10.3 per cent of worldwide Covid vaccinations (vaccination rate of 1.91 injections per persons, all ages) through virtually every vaccine type and manufacturer.

According to these researchers, ‘All-cause mortality by time is the most reliable date for detecting and epidemiologically characterising events causing death, and for gauging the population-level impact of any surge or collapse in deaths from any cause.’ In these 17 countries, they found no evidence of any beneficial effect of Covid vaccination on all-cause mortality, nor any proportional reduction in the mortality rate. On the contrary, the opposite is true.

In that research paper, the authors also showed that every country with sufficient mortality data (Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Malaysia, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, and Uruguay) invariably exhibited an unprecedented and relatively sharp peak or surge in all-ages deaths during or after January-February 2022, which was synchronous with or immediately preceded by a rapid rollout of a Covid vaccine booster, dose 3 or 4, depending on the country.

Regarding the evidence provided in support of causality and toxicity, the authors of this research paper include examples where no detectable excess mortality occurred until the vaccines were rolled out, thus concluding that ‘it is well-established that Covid vaccine injections have caused and are likely to cause the deaths of individuals"

The Motorcade Drives On

"There have been more mass shootings in the US in 2024 than there have been days. In Gaza, the Israeli state is openly carrying out a genocide. (A textbook genocide, writes historian Raz Segal, himself an Israeli). The current Israeli state is driven, in terms of policy, largely by the Otzma Yehudit party and its leader Itamar Ben Gvir. Alongside these events is a winding down of the Ukraine/NATO proxy war against Russia. All of this is set against the complex backdrop of western cultural decay. All of these things beg multiple questions. Now, while Ben-Gvir is a partiuclarly noxious extremist, it needs to be noted that Israel was from its inception a settler colonial project that enforced its displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians through violence. It has occupied them for 75 years through violence, too. So, to suggest that Israeli society has lurched further to the right is, indeed, saying something remarkable.

But certain issues have nagged at me. And my last two posts are certainly related. How could an extremist party like Otzma Yehudit become so influential? On the face of it the leading figures in this party are deeply unappealing. Ben-Gvir himself is an overweight, sloppy fat little man, who appears unkempt and sweaty — he is not the stereotype for charismatic. Nor is anyone else in the party leadership. And the settlers who comprise the bulk of this party refuse military service and get paid a rather generous annuity from the state. And all this has puzzled me. Rates of killing and maiming exceed those of previous Israeli assaults on Gaza, the perpetrators announce their genocidal intent with unusual frankness, and Western media and official apologists are especially shameless.

But in a world under centuries of West European domination, this particular intentional genocide/mass-death event ought to seem familiar. These mass killings have always been necessary for the global system to function, providing land for settlement, cultivation and resource extraction, labor for hyper-exploitation, and geopolitical power.

Still, the very worst thing about these mass deaths is what they are for. They not only maintain Western imperial military and political prerogatives, but they enforce and entrench a global system in which the vast majority of humanity is confined to poorer countries with governments powerless to resist hyper-exploitation of their labor by the multinational corporations of the triad. The greater part of the value produced by their labor is then captured (not “earned”) by these corporations based in the triad. As Intan Suwandi notes in her Value Chains: The New Economic Imperialism, “So extreme is this over accumulation that the twenty-six wealthiest individuals in the world, most of whom are Americans, now own as much wealth as the bottom half of the world’s population, 3.8 billion people.”10 This is not merely unjust, it condemns a great part of the world’s eight billion people to lives of poverty, insecurity, hunger, disease, and violence."
