As Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza unfolds, the spectre of Yosef Weitz lives on, writes Stefan Moore.

"Since 1948, Israel has invoked the Holocaust to justify the forced expulsion of Arabs from Palestine to create a Jewish state, but the systematic blueprint for ethnic cleansing was being drawn up years earlier by a Zionist zealot named Yosef Weitz.

In November 1940 – eight years before the founding of the state of Israel – Weitz wrote:

“It must be clear that there is no room in the country for both peoples … If the Arabs leave it, the country will become wide and spacious for us …. The only solution is a Land…without Arabs. There is no room here for compromises… There is no way but to transfer the Arabs from here to the neighbouring countries … Not one village must be left, not one tribe… There is no other solution.”

Weitz was “a quintessential Zionist colonialist,” writes Israeli historian Ilan Pappé. Born in Russia in 1890 and immigrating to Palestine as a child, Weitz would become the influential head of the Land Settlement Department of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) created to colonise Palestine by purchasing Arab land for the Yishuv (the immigrant Jews in Palestine before 1948)."

Today, as the genocidal war in Gaza unfolds, the spectre of Yosef Weitz lives on.

Since the Nakba of 1948, Israel has used the memory of the Holocaust to silence its critics and to thwart international pressure for a ceasefire in Gaza or for the rights of Palestinians to return to their land. But despite attempts to vindicate, minimise or deny their past, Zionists can never erase the legacy of Yosef Weitz or their blood-soaked history. It is well past time for Israel to acknowledge the inhumanity and futility of their Zionist project."

China’s holdings of US Treasury bonds plunged by $22.7 billion in February to $775 billion, according to data released by the US Treasury Department last week. This is not an isolated development. Over the past decade, China has dumped 40% of its US Treasury holdings. Here's what you need to know:

▪️China has been divesting itself of US debt for several years, with its investment in the latter hitting a 14-year low in Oct 2023.

▪️China is minimizing its exposure to the US dollar, seeing how US has weaponized the greenback by freezing and now threatening to confiscate the Russian Central Bank's financial assets.

▪️Instead, China is stockpiling gold, a reserve asset with no counterparty risk. Its gold reserve now stands at 2,235 tons, just a 100-ton shy of Russia’s, according to World Gold Council.

China continues to buy gold despite rising prices

The new record price for gold does not stop Chinese citizens and the government from buying the metal. The People's Bank of China has been purchasing for 17 consecutive months, which is the longest buying streak in history. In 2022, China bought 218 tons, and last year - 279 tons. Meanwhile, another major gold consumer, India, has reduced purchases by 9%, yielding the top spot to China. The main reasons for such acquisition rates of physical gold include the desire to reduce the share of the dollar in reserves and to hedge the yuan against devaluation.

Investors and the consumer sector are not lagging behind the People's Bank. For wealthy Chinese and companies, gold is a reliable way to preserve their assets. Trading volumes of gold on Chinese exchanges have risen to five-year highs. Gold imports increased by 34% ahead of the Lunar New Year in China, the peak gift-giving season.

Such strong support for the growing market is positively assessed by both speculators and metal producers.

The US is taking sharper aim at Chinese financial institutions, in an effort to stamp out a key source of support for Russia's military production.

Lawmakers in Washington are actively drafting a round of sanctions against such banks, the aim being to completely cut these lenders off from the global financial system...

Although this constitutes a more forceful step than seen before, the ballooning trade between Beijing and Moscow is feared to be helping Russia rebuild its war machine.

While no weapons are exchanged, China has become the lead supplier of essential industrial components, from circuitry to aircraft parts.

New sanctions could go as far as cutting China from accessing the US dollar, the linchpin currency used in global trade.

But it also means risks for Washington, as it could speed up de-dollarization efforts.

Beijing responded to the news by calling the US' approach as "hypocritical," Reuters reported.

"China's right to conduct normal economic and trade exchanges with other countries, including Russia, is inviolable,"...
