Saint George, also known as George of Lydda, was an early Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century. According to tradition, he was martyred for refusing to recant his Christian faith, which led to his execution by beheading in 303 AD in Nicomedia, now part of Turkey.

Very little is known about George's life beyond this basic information. He was born around 280 AD, known for his tall stature and fair hair.

George's veneration began in the 5th century, and his reputation as a martyr grew rapidly.

The legend of Saint George and the Dragon, where he slays a dragon to rescue a princess, is not part of his earliest hagiographies and seems to have been added later. This story became popular in the 12th century and was widely spread through Jacob de Voragine's "Golden Legend" in the 13th century.

Saint George is celebrated as a patron saint in many countries, including England, where he is especially revered. His feast day, April 23rd, has been declared a significant religious holiday in England.
