All Hallows' Eve (October 31) is the vigil, the evening of prayer, fasting, and preparation before All Saints' Day on November 1.

The name comes from Old English hallow (holy/saint) and Scots e'en (evening), meaning "the evening before the feast of all the saints."

It marks the start of Allhallowtide, a three-day Christian season (Oct 31 – Nov 2) dedicated to remembering the dead: the saints in heaven (All Saints' Day) and all the faithful departed, including those in purgatory (All Souls' Day).

The Church's message is one of hope, celebrating Christ's triumph over death and the communion of all believers, living and dead.

The date was fixed in the 8th century, when Pope Gregory III dedicated a chapel in St. Peter's Basilica to all the saints, and Pope Gregory IV later extended the observance to the whole Western Church.

📉 Tech stocks slide as AI jitters spook investors

A deepening sell-off in technology shares is exposing how much of the market's recent record run has been built on faith in AI, and how quickly that faith can wobble when the numbers stop adding up. The S&P 500 fell 1.8% on Friday for its worst day since June, closing out a third straight losing week, WSJ reports.

🔴 Intel plunged almost 29%, its worst single-day drop since 1974, after its profit forecast fell short of expectations. The chipmaker warned it may struggle to generate positive free cash flow next year as AI data center demand pushes up PC prices and its own spending rises

🔴 Alphabet shed 12.6% in its worst day on record, wiping roughly $500 billion off its market value, after reporting that its AI investments were burning through cash faster than expected

🔴 Nvidia, the poster child of the AI boom, dropped 4.2%, briefly ceding its status as the world's most valuable company to Apple

🔴 Amazon fell after disclosing it had spent nearly $95 billion on property and equipment, primarily AI infrastructure, and burned through $42 billion in free cash flow over the past year

The common thread is not valuation alone but a growing unease about whether the hundreds of billions being poured into AI infrastructure will ever produce enough profit to justify the spending. As one portfolio manager put it, the market is moving "out of the hopes and dreams phase of the AI trade and into the 'show me' phase." Investors are now demanding evidence that capital expenditure translates into revenue, not just capacity.

👉 The anxiety is sharpened by the political calendar. Tuesday's midterm elections loom, and President Trump has historically treated the stock market as a scoreboard for his own success. Worries about AI are already cutting across party lines, and a market that remains only 3.1% below its all-time high can still become a liability if the slide continues.

Outside equities, the cryptocurrency market absorbed its own blow. Hackers drained more than $6 billion from Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, in what analysts described as the largest cyber theft on record. Blockchain intelligence firms attributed the attack to a North Korean unit, and Bitcoin fell below $77,000 from over $86,000 earlier in the month. Coinbase dropped 10.6% despite beating expectations, as the crypto complex sold off in sympathy.
