How the Guardian was founded

John Edward Taylor Sr, the Guardian's founder, opposed the Peterloo Massacre protests, which the radical press in Manchester at the time, in particular the Manchester Observer did support, and it was not until the Observer was closed by successive police prosecutions that the Manchester Guardian began.

The Manchester Guardian was founded by cotton merchant John Edward Taylor Sr in 1821, when police closed down the Manchester Oserver for supporting the democratic representation (Peterloo) protest movement. Slavery's use in the cotton industry was abolished 12 years later in 1833.
