"Baruch Marzel: Advocate of ethnic cleansing"

"Marzel was one of the early leaders of hate activist Meir Kahane’s Jewish Defense League (JDL). After Kahane was killed in November 1990, Marzel played a larger role in the organization, which has changed names several times and was represented in Israel’s Knesset (Parliament) as the Kach political party.

Marzel has run for political office in the Knesset and is a member of the Otzma Yehudit political party, which was reorganized from the outlawed Kach.

He has openly advocated the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. “There’s no way we’ll have quiet or peace inside Israel as long as we have here millions of supporters of terror, people that believe in their religion that all of the Land of Israel … is theirs, and that we’re occupiers, and the Jews have no right to a state or can even exist here,” he said. “The only way to have peace is to get them out of Israel.”...

But his activism is not confined to Hebron. Alongside Ben-Zion Gopstein, Michael Ben-Ari and Itamar Ben-Gvir, Marzel founded and became a spokesman for the segregationist Lehava movement.

The Jewish far-right campaigning organization objects to almost every kind of personal relationship between Jews and non-Jews.

Marzel remains active in politics. He is a member of Otzma Yehudit, which calls for Arabs to leave Israel.

The willingness of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to work with such parties means their influence cannot be underestimated.

Netanyahu even received criticism from AIPAC, the largest pro-Israel lobby in the US, over the election alliance he agreed to with Otzma Yehudit."

"Kahanists have quickly built on their electoral success, establishing a foothold in the Israeli mainstream. Two months after his 2021 election to the Knesset—which conferred upon him parliamentary immunity—Kahanist Jewish Power party leader Itamar Ben Gvir organized anti-Palestinian pogroms across the country—race riots that Israeli Police Commander Kobi Shabtai characterized as “a Jewish intifada.” According to statistics gathered by Israeli liberal watchdog group Darkenu, local television channels now give Ben Gvir and his racist incitements more screen time than any other Knesset member. The uncritical coverage helped the Kahanists place third in the November 2022 elections, winning fourteen of 120 seats in the Knesset and transforming Ben Gvir into the kingmaker of Israeli politics.

Returning to power, Netanyahu has installed Ben Gvir as his national security minister and given him unprecedented power over Israel’s security forces, including the power to relax open-fire regulations, permitting them to gun down Palestinians with even greater impunity. It has also tabled a bill that would give Ben Gvir additional authorities until now only wielded by Israel’s Defense Minister: the power to restrict any person’s movements, employment and communications, and even to imprison them for up to six months at a time, all based on secret evidence. The new Likud-Kahanist government has also announced its intention to pass a new law permitting Jewish business owners—including medical personnel—to deny services to non-Jews and to overturn an old law that disqualified the Knesset candidacy of unabashed racists who openly call for non-Jews to be expelled from the country.

Former US Vice President Mike Pence had already made official the Republican Party’s support for Kahanism in March 2022, when he toured Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank and home to some of the most reactionary Jewish settlers, as a guest of the Kahane movement. There, Pence visited the Ibrahimi Mosque—where Goldstein committed his massacre—accompanied by Ben Gvir. “Stay strong, and we’ll stand with you” were the warm words Pence used to bless Ben Gvir."

"Swiftly on the heels of the government’s swearing in, and in the face of warnings from the United States, the international community, and Israel’s own security establishment, Ben Gvir chose to message his long-stated position that “Israel is the owner of the Temple Mount” by paying a heavily secured visit to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif.

Parsing technicalities surrounding provocations in a conflict cauldron is a dangerous game, particularly at a site as storied a flashpoint as the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount. For Palestinians, Christian and Muslim alike, Al Aqsa mosque is considered their most powerful national symbol, making visits expressly intended to display Israeli sovereignty a potent provocation. It is in this vein that Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted on maintaining the status quo, as recently as 2020 noting that 'Jewish prayer at the Temple Mount, though it sounds like a reasonable thing, I know it would have ignited the Middle East … There’s a limit. There are things that I’m not willing to do to win an election.'...

Within hours of Ben Gvir’s visit and a UAE condemnation, Netanyahu’s planned upcoming official visit to the UAE was postponed. Subsequently, the UAE has joined with China in calling for an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting to discuss concerns over these latest Jerusalem developments. Meanwhile, Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Israel’s ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom to explain the provocation, Egypt and Turkey have both registered objection, and Saudi Arabia, the normalization “prize” Netanyahu most seeks, joined the chorus of condemnation in characterizing Ben Gvir’s visit as a “storming” of the Al-Aqsa."

The extent to which this vocal condemnation from Arab partners can serve to rein in the more extreme impulses of the Israeli government remains to be seen. Normalization with the Arab world is deeply popular among Israelis, but Netanyahu’s most extreme coalition partners on whom he relies are driven more by their annexationist and Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif sovereignty goals than by the lure of regional normalization or fear of the international community’s condemnation."
