This was the Palestinian Legislative Council building in Gaza. It was the symbol of the 2006 democratic process which led the Change and Reform Party, a.k.a Hamas, to gain power by a very small majority with 44.45% of the vote and 74 of the 132 seats, whilst the ruling Fatah received 41.43% of the vote and won 45 seats. What Gaza really needed were new elections, not to demolish the building which represents democracy. What message about democracy does blowing up the building which symbolised democracy give?
