The Motorcade Drives On
"There have been more mass shootings in the US in 2024 than there have been days. In Gaza, the Israeli state is openly carrying out a genocide. (A textbook genocide, writes historian Raz Segal, himself an Israeli). The current Israeli state is driven, in terms of policy, largely by the Otzma Yehudit party and its leader Itamar Ben Gvir. Alongside these events is a winding down of the Ukraine/NATO proxy war against Russia. All of this is set against the complex backdrop of western cultural decay. All of these things beg multiple questions. Now, while Ben-Gvir is a partiuclarly noxious extremist, it needs to be noted that Israel was from its inception a settler colonial project that enforced its displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians through violence. It has occupied them for 75 years through violence, too. So, to suggest that Israeli society has lurched further to the right is, indeed, saying something remarkable.
But certain issues have nagged at me. And my last two posts are certainly related. How could an extremist party like Otzma Yehudit become so influential? On the face of it the leading figures in this party are deeply unappealing. Ben-Gvir himself is an overweight, sloppy fat little man, who appears unkempt and sweaty — he is not the stereotype for charismatic. Nor is anyone else in the party leadership. And the settlers who comprise the bulk of this party refuse military service and get paid a rather generous annuity from the state. And all this has puzzled me. As Intan Suwandi notes in her Value Chains: The New Economic Imperialism, “So extreme is this over accumulation that the twenty-six wealthiest individuals in the world, most of whom are Americans, now own as much wealth as the bottom half of the world’s population, 3.8 billion people.”10 This is not merely unjust, it condemns a great part of the world’s eight billion people to lives of poverty, insecurity, hunger, disease, and violence."

UK households are to pay for energy even more this winter
British households using the least amounts of energy will pay the biggest rate increases this winter after the government ended support for people experiencing a cost of living crisis.
Regulator Ofgem raised the national price cap for the Q1 of next year to £1,928, up 5% from the current £1,834, it said in a statement on Thursday.
The tariff represents the annual bill for a typical British household.
The tariff increase comes at a time when Britons are facing persistent inflation in the price of food and basic goods, and the government is struggling with worsening economic growth forecasts.
On Wednesday, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's tax cut package failed to provide additional targeted support for households struggling with rising energy bills, despite warnings from the industry about rising household debt.

BOE to train financial institutions for bonds collapse
Britain's biggest banks and asset managers will be tested against a hypothetical shock stronger than last year's gilt-edged market spiral as part of a Bank of England exercise.
More than 50 financial market participants are taking part in it, the statement said.
The central bank said the new test could include a scenario in which the cost of UK government borrowing costs increase "very sharply" and the yield on 10-year nominal gilts (government bonds) rises 115 basis points.
This would be similar to the movement seen during the shock tied to liability-driven investments (LDI) last year, when gilt prices collapsed in the wake of then-Prime Minister Liz Truss’s historic tax-cutting plan. Pension fund managers using LDIs faced margin calls back then.
In the end the central bank had to step in to stabilize the market.
