"The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation."

CHURCH TIMES: βStop the slaughterβ says Christian Aid, as Gaza ceasefire calls gain momentum
"UK POLITICIANS must vote to stop the slaughter and vote for an immediate and permanent ceasefire,β Christian Aid told Parliament on the eve of a crucial debate and vote on the Israel-Hamas conflict on Wednesday.
βWhen they step into the chamber to vote, MPs and ministers must put aside politics and imagine it were their own mother or father, son or daughter, trapped in Gaza facing injury or death,β Christian Aidβs head of UK advocacy and campaigns, Jennifer Larbie, said.
βUK politicians must vote to stop the slaughter and vote for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. In doing so, they will undoubtedly save lives. By failing to do so, they will continue to ensure the UK is complicit in the suffering of the Palestinian people.β
Calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war have increased since the House of Bishops issued its statement, calling for an immediate ceasefire, on Tuesday of last week (News, 16 February). The debate and vote on the Commons motion took place at the time of going to press.
On a visit to the Holy Land this week, the general secretary of the World Council of Churches, the Revd Professor Jerry Pillay, met separately with religious and political leaders to press for a ceasefire.
βAs a worldwide fellowship of Churches, we continue to express our compassion and prayers for the ending of the war, the healing of deep wounds, and respect for human lives and rights,β Professor Pillay said.
βWe urge all parties and powers concerned to seek an immediate ceasefire and enter dialogues to establish just peace, safety, and security in both Israel and Palestine. We call on the international community, especially political leaders, to support these endeavours and to act urgently.β

Clair Dobbin, for the Crown Prosecution Service, which is representing the US government, is arguing that Assangeβs activity is distinguishable from that of a journalist. She cites the fact that Mr. Assange helped whistleblower Chelsea Manning in cracking a hash.
However, this was Mr. Assangeβs attempt as a journalist to help Manning conceal her identity when accessing classified material. This was done to protect Manning, a whistleblower, from harm. It is not just good practice but an obligation of journalists to protect their sources.
Dobbin continues to argue that WikiLeaks published the names of informants, which may have put their lives at risk. However, there is no evidence that anyone was harmed. Moreover, one of the judges intervened and said - by the time Mr. Assange published the documents through WikiLeaks, (which were redacted) the unredacted files were already published by several organizations.

Pastor says Welby would not meet him if he spoke at Palestine rally with Corbyn
Archbishop said he could not meet Bethlehem Lutheran Munther Isaac if he shared platform with former Labour leader, Isaac says
"The archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, cancelled plans to meet the Bethlehem-based Lutheran pastor Munther Isaac, saying he could not meet him if he shared a platform with the former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at a pro-Palestinian rally, the pastor has said.
Isaac, the pastor of the Christmas Evangelical Lutheran church in Bethlehem, who has been highly critical of Israel in Gaza, saw his Christmas sermon go viral when he said if Jesus Christ was born today it would have been under the rubble.
He spoke at a Palestinian Solidarity Campaign rally at the weekend where Corbyn was also a speaker after being invited by the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot.
In an interview with the Guardian, Isaac said he was told by the archbishopβs aides that if he shared a platform with Corbyn, no meeting could happen. Isaac said: βItβs shameful. Itβs not my type of Christianity not to be willing to meet another pastor because you donβt want to explain why you met him.
βThis sums up the Church of England. They danced around positions, and ended up saying nothing. They lack the courage to say things.β
