The combined forces of El Niño and La Niña have crippled Latin American soy output. Ukrainian and Russian grain farmers have gone to war. Indonesia has banned shipments of palm oil to Europe, while China is hungry for crops. The Mediterranean region is getting more like a desert.

Over two days in central Brussels last month, some 60 European Union and government officials, food security experts, industry representatives and a few journalists gathered to confront the possibility of something barely on the radar a few years ago: a full-blown food crisis.

The group sat down in a refurbished art deco Shell building to simulate what might happen, and help design policies aimed at prevention and response.

To watch one of the best-fed regions in the world stress test its food system underscores a growing level of alarm among governments over securing supplies for their populations.

Asia’s palm oil export limits are now reducing supplies of daily staples from margarine to bread.

In Europe, government-led exercises are rare, let alone one focused on food,...

“We’ve been living in crisis for the last three years,” said Hegadorn, adjunct professor of global food politics at Sciences Po in Paris. “There's a lot more to be done on every level. Crises are only going to come faster and harder.”

Leaked US cable acknowledges ‘catastrophic’ cost of Israel’s Rafah invasion

"The leaked cable shows that the US acknowledges that the impact of such an invasion would be cataclysmic.  

“A potential escalation of military operations within Southern Gaza’s Rafah Governorate could result in catastrophic humanitarian consequences, including mass civilian casualties, extensive population displacement, and the collapse of the existing humanitarian response, multiple relief actors have warned USAID’s Levant Disaster Assistance Response Team,”

the cable written by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance reads. 

Among the “key points” mentioned in the cable, an Israeli offensive in Rafah would “block the entry and transport of fuel and life-saving humanitarian assistance throughout the enclave,” further worsening the state of Palestinians who have already faced a near five-month-long siege by the Israeli army.  

The cable explains that there is no viable plan of evacuation for the Palestinians displaced in Rafah. Israel’s option to the Palestinians is to live as refugees in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, which the latter refused completely.  

The US cable also acknowledges that “a large portion of those residing in Rafah, including elderly populations, exhausted IDPs, and those with reduced mobility, would likely remain in the governorate during the potential military operation due to lack of viable alternatives, heightening the risk of mass casualties.”

I come to the judgment I offered when the war that began in 2014 erupted into open conflict two years ago. The Russian intervention was regrettable but necessary. I took some stick for this view back in 2022. I learn lately it is recorded in some European intelligence files as if it were a major transgression.

It is as true now as then. All we learn in drips and drops about the Western powers’ various covert doings in the sad, failed state they have done much to ruin, confirms this.
