China’s holdings of US Treasury bonds plunged by $22.7 billion in February to $775 billion, according to data released by the US Treasury Department last week. This is not an isolated development. Over the past decade, China has dumped 40% of its US Treasury holdings. Here's what you need to know:

▪️China has been divesting itself of US debt for several years, with its investment in the latter hitting a 14-year low in Oct 2023.

▪️China is minimizing its exposure to the US dollar, seeing how US has weaponized the greenback by freezing and now threatening to confiscate the Russian Central Bank's financial assets.

▪️Instead, China is stockpiling gold, a reserve asset with no counterparty risk. Its gold reserve now stands at 2,235 tons, just a 100-ton shy of Russia’s, according to World Gold Council.

China continues to buy gold despite rising prices

The new record price for gold does not stop Chinese citizens and the government from buying the metal. The People's Bank of China has been purchasing for 17 consecutive months, which is the longest buying streak in history. In 2022, China bought 218 tons, and last year - 279 tons. Meanwhile, another major gold consumer, India, has reduced purchases by 9%, yielding the top spot to China. The main reasons for such acquisition rates of physical gold include the desire to reduce the share of the dollar in reserves and to hedge the yuan against devaluation.

Investors and the consumer sector are not lagging behind the People's Bank. For wealthy Chinese and companies, gold is a reliable way to preserve their assets. Trading volumes of gold on Chinese exchanges have risen to five-year highs. Gold imports increased by 34% ahead of the Lunar New Year in China, the peak gift-giving season.

Such strong support for the growing market is positively assessed by both speculators and metal producers.

While no weapons are exchanged, China has become the lead supplier of essential industrial components, from circuitry to aircraft parts.

New sanctions could go as far as cutting China from accessing the US dollar, the linchpin currency used in global trade.

But it also means risks for Washington, as it could speed up de-dollarization efforts.

Beijing responded to the news by calling the US' approach as "hypocritical," Reuters reported.
