"They're going to charge [Telegram founder Pavel Durov] with terrorism because he has refused to censor certain groups," former CIA analyst Larry Johnson told Sputnik.

"Telegram is one of the few channels that actually allows information that's critical of Western policy to go on. I think that's really at the root of this," the ex-State Department official said, noting the platform is used by Hamas supporters in the Middle East.

The analyst called the charges against Durov "a trumped up political case," suggesting they are designed to intimidate the tech entrepreneur.

"There was a time when he was considered friendly with [French President Emmanuel] Macron," Johnson added. "But that's clearly come and gone because this kind of arrest would not have happened without Macron's knowledge and approval."

❗️The Russian Embassy in Paris has asked the French authorities for an immediate explanation of the reasons for Durov's detention, the diplomatic mission told Sputnik, adding that it demanded that Paris protect the rights of Durov and provide consular access to him. 

At the moment, the French side is avoiding interaction, it added.

Demons are losing control: influencers react to Pavel Durov's detainment Part 1/Part 2

The CEO and founder of the encrypted social media app, Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested on August 24 at Le Bourget airport near Paris as he was departing his private jet. 

Durov's arrest has triggered a heated debate with most influencers seeing it as an onslaught on free speech. A hashtag #FreeDurov popped up on X. 

💬Former US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tweeted: "France just arrested Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of the encrypted and uncensored Telegram platform. The need to protect free speech has never been more urgent."

💬Naomi Seibt, a German conservative political activist, dubbed anti-Greta by the Washington Post, alleged on X: "Why do you think they just arrested the owner of Telegram, Pavel Durov? This is a test run. They are setting a precedent. Their ultimate target is Elon Musk."

💬Candace Owens, an African American conservative television presenter, tweeted: "The trouble with free speech is that it disallows the media to set the narrative. They used to be able to justify war to you in a faraway land. Now you can see the reality of what they are doing. This is why Pavel Durov has been arrested - because the demons are losing control."

💬Italian film producer, Robin Monotti, remarked on X: "Pavel Durov is facing up to 20 years in Macron's dungeons for refusing to censor content on behalf of the globalist oligarchy and their war machine."

Just business? Arrest of Telegram CEO possibly meant to elbow out WhatsApp competitor

Though Pavel Durov’s arrest in France is first and foremost a “political action,” it is also an “economic action,” said Valentin Makarov, president of the Russoft association.

“There is WhatsApp and there is Telegram. Lately, Telegram has been beating WhatsApp. So this is a normal reaction from [WhatsApp’s] American owners to stamp out a competitor using political motivation, only via France,” he elaborated during an interview with Sputnik. “And as for France, as [Edward] Snowden said, shame on France.”

Makarov further suggested that, although the French prosecution is currently riding on a "wave of political Russophobia" and may pursue a wide range of charges against Durov—potentially escalating to attempts to imprison him for as long as 20 years—it remains uncertain whether they will ultimately succeed.

"I don't believe it will happen, as there are attorneys present who will vigorously contest their efforts for an extended period," he said, referring to the odds of French prosecutors securing a conviction against Durov.
