Friends on tinder? Or is my bf gaslighting me..

So, my friend is always on tinder swiping and yesterday we hung out while she was showing me her matches and how it all worked etc. She swiped a few times until we noticed my bf was on the app.. my heart just dropped. Tinder is for dating and hookups I thought, why is he using this app.
I confronted him and he went silent for a good min cause he understood I was hurt by the discovery. He they explained to me that there is a “find friends/social” area on the app as well and that’s what he was doing, not looking for anything else etc.
… to me it sounds very strange but then again I don’t know how the app works.
I just know my friend is using it for dating yet my bf shows up in her swipes.
Does that mean he is using the app for dating since he shows up for my friend, or is it all mixed where you swipe for both friends and dating ? Cause I don’t believe he is on the social if he shows up for those looking for dating/hookups.
Please help explain if anyone knows about this feature and if he is telling me the truth or not.

EDIT:
He apparently re-downloaded it this weekend after some other friends told him about the new friend feature. He moved out of town to stay closer to me, he made some friends that are from his school. He just started using the app again instead of looking for other friend making apps, then my friend found him on it the very same night he stated using it, without swiping or chatting with anyone. Apparently.
Update - I will still meet up to see him in person, to talk and let him know how I feel and where I stand about it all.
