A Series of Reminders About The Month of Ramaḍān - No.38

Make The Most Of Laylatul al-Qadr

Ibn Rajab رحمه الله said: "O you who has wasted the years of his life, there is nothing that will amend those lost and wasted years except for the night of Al-Qadr, for verily its value is equivalent to that of a lifetime."

Our Shaykh Abū Bilāl - may Allāh preserve him- was asked on 19th Ramadhān 1443 (20th April 2022):

📝🔹Question:

If a person fasts thirty days in Ramadhān and then travels on that last day to another country where it is the twenty-ninth of Ramadhān; should he fast a thirty-first day or not fast?

📩🔸Answer:

He should fast with them because they have not had 'Eid, but this day [in his case] is not from Ramadhān because he has already fasted thirty days and
<The month is like this and like this> (1)sometimes twenty-nine and sometimes thirty [days].

Ultimately, he should have 'Eid with the people and should not have 'Eid by himself, but if he does not fast because he has already completed the number of days he has to, he should not make it apparent that he is not fasting.

Zakāt al-Fitr

Question: In our country Zakāt ul-Fitr is distributed as money, on the basis that the poor people are not in need of any grains or other than that [from food]. What should we do?

Shaykh Sālih al-Fawzān, [may Allāh preserve him] said:

“The matter is not up to the poor people [to decide], this is an act of worship which must be as the Messenger صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ enjoined. The one who does not want food, is not in need of it, give it [Zakāt al-Fitr] to the needy who wants food.”

Because Yaʿqūb ʿalayhi al-salām warned (his son) Yūsuf not to relate his dream to his brothers or they would contrive a plan against him [12:5],

This is an evidence that it is permissible to not disclose one's blessings to those who you fear will plot against or be envious of you.

🔆 In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

💠 Allaah [The Most High] said

And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find peace in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect. [Soorah

Ar-Rum: Ayah: 21

▫️Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: Iblis places his throne upon water; he then sends detachments [for creating dissension]; the nearer to him in rank are those who are most notorious in creating dissension. One of them comes and says: I did so and so. And he says: You have done nothing. Then one amongst them comes and says: I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord between a husband and a wife. The Satan goes near him and says: ‘You have done well. A’mash said: He then embraces him.

[Saheeh Muslim. Number:2813]

♦️Shaykh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said:

And because of the fact that this bond [between husband and wife] is from the most beloved affairs to Allaah and His Messenger, it is from the most hated affairs to the enemy of Allaah [i.e. shaytaan]. Therefore he hastens to split two people who love another for the sake of Allaah.

And the increase of the īmān by ḏikr (mentioning Allah) is from two aspects:
فزيادة الإيمان بالذكر من وجهين:

The first of them is: That it renews al-īmān and the belief in the heart which had disappeared due to al-ġaflah (ie: negligence).

Just as Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “al-ḏikr raises the īmān in the heart just as water raises the vegetation.”

And in “al-Musnad” from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Renew your īmān.”

They said: “How do we renew our īmān?”

He said: “Say: Lā ilāha illa Allah.”

And the second is: That al-ḏikr itself is from the characteristics of īmān. So al-īmān increases by the increase in al-ḏikr.

WHEN DOES 'ISHA END? |
A question many have been asking

The answer to this question lies in the following two hadeeths:

1⃣. The hadeeth of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr radhiyallahu anhu, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

((وَوَقْتُ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ الْأَوْسَطِ))

“The time of 'Isha' prayer is until midnight.”
[Reported by Muslim]

2⃣. The hadeeth of Abu Qatadah radhiyallahu anhu, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

((أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي النَّوْمِ تَفْرِيطٌ إِنَّمَا التَّفْرِيطُ عَلَى مَنْ لَمْ يُصَلِّ الصَّلاَةَ حَتَّى يَجِيءَ وَقْتُ الصَّلاَةِ الأُخْرَى))

“There is no neglect in (missing prayer unintentionally due to) sleep. Neglect is that one delays praying (intentionally) until the time of the next prayer comes in.”
[Reported by Muslim]

The scholars harmonised between these two seemingly contradictory hadeeths and said that 'Isha has two end times:

1⃣. Preferred time (ikhtiyaari) - which runs from the start of Isha till midnight. This is taken from the first hadeeth.

2⃣. Time of necessity (Idhtiraari) - which starts from midnight till dawn break. This is taken from the second hadeeth.

For example, Al-Lajnah Ad-Daa'imah stated (6/113):

”وقت العشاء من غيبوبة الشفق الأحمر إلى نصف الليل، وهذا وقت الاختيار لها، ووقت الاضطرار من نصف الليل إلى طلوع الفجر.“

“The time for 'Isha is from the disappearance of the red twilight until midnight; and this is the preferred time (ikhtiyari), and the time of necessity (idhtirari) is from midnight until the break of dawn.”

So what is the difference between these two end times?

Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah said:

”لو صلاها بعد نصف الليل أداها في الوقت، لكن يأثم؛ لأنه أخرها إلى وقت الضرورة.“

“If one were to pray 'Isha after midnight then he has offered it on time, but he is sinful; because he has delayed it until the time of necessity.”
[Fataawa ibn Baz (10/384)]

So although the prayer is valid in both cases, one is sinful for delaying 'Isha beyond the preferred time without excuse. However, if one has a valid excuse for delaying, there is no sin upon them.

NOTE 1:
Midnight is calculated by working out the midpoint between maghrib and Fajr. This is done by taking the time between the two points and dividing that by two.

NOTE 2:
Although we can work out an accurate time for midnight, it doesn't mean that one is sinful if they are 1/2 minutes over. The scholars have mentioned that there is some leniency in this regard due to the hadeeth of A'isha radhiyallahu anha, in which she said:

((أَعْتَمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ عَامَّةُ اللَّيْلِ وَحَتَّى نَامَ أَهْلُ الْمَسْجِدِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَصَلَّى فَقَالَ: ”إِنَّهُ لَوَقْتُهَا لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي“))

“One night the Prophet (ﷺ) delayed (observing 'Isha prayer) till much of the night had passed and the people in the masjid had fallen asleep. He ﷺ then came out and observed prayer and said: This is the proper time for it; were it not that I would impose a burden on my people (I would normally pray at this time).”
[Reported by Muslim]

Muhammad Ibn AbdilHaadi As-Sindi mentioned in his commentary on Sunan An-Nasa'i - under the above hadeeth:

‌‏(حتى ذهب عامة الليل) ‏ ‏أي غالبه والمتبادر منه أنه صلى بعد أن ذهب من النصف الأخير أيضا شيء.

“(Till much of the night had passed) i.e. most of it, and it is very likely that he prayed after a part of the next half had also passed.”

“One sheep is sufficient for a man and the members of his household. The Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ would offer an _udhiyah_ every year, he would sacrifice two horned rams that were white speckled with black, one on behalf of himself and on behalf of the members of his household, and the other on behalf of all those among his Nation, those who affirmed the Oneness of Allāh.”

Ladies, aspire to be a good housewife and a good mother.

Aspire to be a feminine, womanly wife who is supportive of and submissive to her husband.

Aspire to cook well, run a smooth household, bear and raise and nurture children lovingly.

Aspire to be a woman of good character, good judgment, and good manners.

Aspire to be devoted entirely to your husband and dedicated wholly to your home and family.

Aspire to be a sincere, devout slave of Allah who is marrying with good niyya: following the sunnah, seeking ajr, and hoping for Jannah.

Do NOT aspire to be a driven careerist woman.

Do NOT aspire to be a competitive academic.

Do NOT aspire to be independent or well-traveled or a leader of men.

I know that everything I say above is going to outrage some people and trigger a barrage of condescending comments talking about "And you went to Harvard??!!?"

But this, quite frankly, is what almost all men want from a wife and what almost all women want to truly be happy. Human nature doesn't change much, even if culture shifts dramatically.

These are the basic truths that our grandmothers and their mothers knew. This is the old-school common sense.

Men make money and women make the home.

Men are providers and protectors, and women are nurturers and beautifiers.

Men go out and earn; women stay home and hold down the fort. Both are work.

Softness and beauty are admired; gentleness and fragility are protected.

The forte of men is in physical strength, and the forte of women is in emotional strength.

Men like feminine women and women like masculine men.

Men are men and women are women.

It's not complicated.

But we modern "liberated, independent, and empowered" women have walked away from our mothers' astute wisdom, at our own expense and to our own misery.

We've fallen hard for the education trap, the careerist trap, the equality trap. I'm not saying you can't touch these things ever; I'm saying don't allow these things to be your focus.

A hyper-focus on decades of higher education or career at the expense of marriage will rob you of the best and most fertile years of your life.

In her heart of hearts, way deep down, almost every woman wants to be married. She longs to be in a committed and stable relationship with a strong, masculine man who shows her love and takes care of her and has taqwa of Allah. She wants the joy of cuddling her children and the warmth of a happy home.

Of course we don't always get what we want in life--but it's important to know what to aspire to.

If we have all the wrong aspirations based on a flawed and incoherent value system, then how do we even stand a shot at true happiness?

▪️The Ruling on Celebrating the Prophet's (ﷺ) Birthday

- It is not permissible for Muslims to organize celebrations for the birthday of the Prophet ﷺ on the night of the twelfth of Rabīʿ Al-Awwal, nor on any other night; nor is it permissible for them to organize celebrations for any other person's birthday, because celebrating a birthday is an innovation in the religion, for the Prophet ﷺ did not celebrate his birthday at any time in his life, and he is the conveyor of the religion and the dispenser of the Law from his Lord, the Most Glorified. Nor did he order others to do it, and neither did his righteous Caliphs, nor any of his Companions, nor the Tabiʿīn who followed them well, in the best generations (of Islām). Therefore, it is known to be an innovation. He ﷺ said:

"مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ"

"Whoever initated something in this matter (i.e. this religion) of ours that is not from it, will have it rejected."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī 2697]

And in Muslim's version, and a version (also) reported by Al-Bukhārī in a Muʿallaq form:

"مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَهُوَ رَدٌّ"

"Whoever performed a deed which is not in conformity with this matter (i.e. this religion) of ours, will have it rejected."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1718]

Celebrating his birthday is not in conformity with his religion; on the contrary, it is one of the things people have innovated in his religion in recent times, and is therefore rejected. He ﷺ used to say, during his Friday sermon:

"أَمَّا بَعْدُ ؛ فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ، وَخَيْرُ الْهُدَى هُدَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَشَرُّ الْأُمُورِ مُحْدَثَاتُهَا، وَكُلُّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ"

"As for what follows: Verily, the best of speech is the Book of Allāh, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muḥammad (ﷺ), and the most evil of matters are the newly invented ones, and every innovation is a misguidance."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 867]

An-Nasa'i added, with an authentic chain of narrators:

"وَكُلَّ ضَلَالَةٍ فِي النَّارِ"

"... and every misguidance is in the Fire."
[Sunan An-Nasā'i 1578]

Studies of Ḥadīth related to his birth, studies connected with his Sīrah, the history of his life - both before and after Islām - as taught in the schools and mosques and other places should be free from any birthday celebrations, since there is no need for innovating celebrations which have not been legislated by Allāh or His Messenger, nor has a legal evidence been established for it... And Allāh answers the one who asks Him; so we ask Allāh on behalf of all of the Muslims that He guide them and grant them success in sufficing themselves with the Sunnah and abstaining from all innovations.

[Sheikh Ibn Bāz, Fatāwā Islāmiyah 1/281-3]
