In this conversation, Nithin Sridhar explains why the Manusmriti and Dharmashastras cannot be understood through cherry-picking, colonial translations or modern ideological filters. From Shruti and Smriti to Lokachara and the Shravana-Manana-Nididhyasana tradition, discover how these texts were actually meant to be approached. Before condemning a civilisation’s Shastras, perhaps we should first learn how to read them.

Are Hindus asking for too much when we simply expect to celebrate our festivals without our Gods and processions being targeted?
In Mumbai’s Mazgaon, eggs were hurled at the Mazgaoncha Morya Ganpati Aagman procession, with one hitting the Ganpati idol. An FIR has now been registered. How many times must Hindus be told to remain peaceful, adjust and move on when even a festival procession cannot pass without being targeted?
What defines a civilisation?
Not just progress, but whether it has the courage to confront its past and correct historical wrongs.
Some questions make people uncomfortable. That is precisely why they must be asked.

At first glance, you might think this is somewhere in Pakistan.
Look again. This is London.
A Jaloos marking Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, moving through the streets of Britain’s capital. Britain is changing before our eyes. The question is whether the British themselves realise just how rapidly.

The story of Brahmin “privilege” looks very different when you examine present-day socio-economic realities.
Prof. Kapil Kapoor challenges one of India’s most persistent narratives, explaining that many Brahmin communities today face poverty, shrinking opportunities and little institutional support.
He also examines how caste-based electoral coalitions shaped post-Independence politics and deepened social divisions.

When there’s nothing substantive left to say, “patriarchy” often enters the conversation. Add “Brahmin” before it and apparently the argument is complete. J Sai Deepak challenges this familiar playbook. Why is #Manusmriti repeatedly pulled into political attacks on Hindu society, while the Quran, the Old Testament and other religious texts rarely face the same public examination?

Prasar Bharati Archives glorifies Ismat Chughtai as a “fearless” feminist icon. Her own autobiographical writing recounts secretly feeding meat to a Hindu friend who did not eat it, and taking satisfaction in doing so.

Before he became the “Wizard of Hockey”, Major Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army in 1922 and honed his game there. He went on to help India win three consecutive Olympic hockey golds in 1928, 1932 and 1936, with official accounts crediting him with more than 1,000 goals during his career.
On his birth anniversary, India observes #NationalSportsDay in honour of a man who turned Indian hockey into a global force.
Remembering #MajorDhyanChand.
As India celebrates #NationalSportsDay, here is a sporting story that deserves far more attention.

30 August 1659. Dara Shikoh was executed.
History remembers him as the “liberal” Mughal prince who sought Hindu-Muslim unity. But is that what he was actually trying to achieve? Sreejit Datta explains that Dara’s study of Hindu traditions was driven by his search for Tawhid, the Islamic concept of divine unity, across other faiths. A fascinating challenge to the popular Dara Shikoh narrative.
