Adidas Originals to launch debut NFT collection.
The iconic sportswear brand recently partnered with three distinguished members of the NFT space: Bored Ape Yacht Club, GMoney and PUNKS Comics, to advance metaverse ambitions.
Adidas Originals have announced the upcoming launch of their nonfungible token (NFT) collection titled Into the Metaverse.
Although details on the supply are sparse at this time, it has been revealed that the digital asset will serve as an access token, promising holders’ exclusive access to future merchandise, physical and digital product and services, rewards within the newly attained land plot in The Sandbox, and more.
The collection’s sale will commence via the company’s official website on Dec. 17 at a price of 0.2 ETH, equivalent to approximately $810 at the time of writing.
Cointelegraph spoke to NFT influencer GMoney to discuss his expectations for Adidas' emergence into the NFT market:
“They have been very thoughtful and deliberate on their entrance into the space. I think they will help empower communities and creators by building together.”
On Dec. 2, Adidas Originals announced their foray into the metaverse with partnerships with Bored Ape Yacht Club, GMoney and PUNKS Comic, stating that digital worlds that constitute the metaverse will be a place “where anyone can express their most original ideas and be their most authentic selves.”
Alongside this, it was revealed that Adidas purchased Ape #8774 — a blue-furred, heart-bespectacled ape with a fisherman's hat and gold hoop earning — on Sept. 17 for 46ETH, a little over $150,000 at the time.
Upon the announcement, the ape was displayed in an Adidas tracksuit sporting the logos of the three respective partners, as well as a side-ways Adidas logo.
GMoney spoke about his role in supporting the brands entrance into the space in a culturally-conscious way, stating:

US Financial Stability Oversight Council identifies stablecoins and cryptos as threats to financial system.
"The Council recommends that state and federal regulators review available regulations and tools that could be applied to digital assets," says the FSOC.
In an annual report published on Friday, the United States Financial Stability Oversight Council, or FSOC, voiced its concern over the adoption of stablecoins and other digital assets.
Regarding stablecoins, the FSOC said consumer confidence could be undermined by factors such as illiquidity, lack of appropriate safeguards, opacity regarding redemption rights and cyber attacks. "A run on stablecoins during strained market conditions may have the potential to amplify a shock to the economy and the financial system," the report said.
The report also alerted to developments in decentralized finance, or DeFi, where the use of high leverage could trigger a fire sale when the price of the underlying asset declines. This would result in a cycle of margin calls and further price declines. In addition, the report outlined that "users of these services face the risk of loss due to market value fluctuations, operational issues and cybersecurity threats, among other risks." In the report's recommendations, the FSOC calls for a unified effort between federal and state authorities to enact legislation on stablecoins and digital currencies.
Despite concerns surrounding the much-unregulated nature of the crypto industry, the report highlighted their innovative potential:
"The development of digital assets and the use of associated distributed ledger technology may present the opportunity to promote innovation and further modernization of financial infrastructure. Regulatory attention and coordination are critically important in light of the quickly evolving market for digital assets."

In an annual report published on Friday, the United States Financial Stability Oversight Council, or FSOC, voiced its concern over the adoption of stablecoins and other digital assets.
Regarding stablecoins, the FSOC said consumer confidence could be undermined by factors such as illiquidity, lack of appropriate safeguards, opacity regarding redemption rights and cyber attacks. "A run on stablecoins during strained market conditions may have the potential to amplify a shock to the economy and the financial system," the report said.
The report also alerted to developments in decentralized finance, or DeFi, where the use of high leverage could trigger a fire sale when the price of the underlying asset declines. This would result in a cycle of margin calls and further price declines. In addition, the report outlined that "users of these services face the risk of loss due to market value fluctuations, operational issues and cybersecurity threats, among other risks." In the report's recommendations, the FSOC calls for a unified effort between federal and state authorities to enact legislation on stablecoins and digital currencies.
Despite concerns surrounding the much-unregulated nature of the crypto industry, the report highlighted their innovative potential:
"The development of digital assets and the use of associated distributed ledger technology may present the opportunity to promote innovation and further modernization of financial infrastructure. Regulatory attention and coordination are critically important in light of the quickly evolving market for digital assets."

Despite central bank officials’ call for heavy monitoring, Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua is launching an NFT collection.
In an announcement made on Wednesday, China’s official Xinhua News Agency will issue its first series of nonfungible token (NFT) collectibles. The move is a thumbs up to blockchain technology previously shunned by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). In an official notice, Xinhua plans to publish 10,000 copies of 11 photos taken by journalists in 2021.
The stride into NFTs is puzzling in light of recent events in the world’s second-largest economy. Following a nationwide crypto crackdown where Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) mining was banned, China has recently taken aim at NFTs and metaverses and proposed that they should be heavily monitored. Despite the anti-crypto sentiment, tech giants Tencent and Huawei were not discouraged from pursuing trademarks in the metaverse.
Elsewhere, in early December, as part of a broader anti-crypto crackdown, some websites in Beijing, including ChainNews, went offline. Chinese crypto media kept a low profile on their websites and instead focused on growing communities on Twitter and Telegram.
Curiously, however, it’s not the country’s first move into NFTs. During the “DeFi Summer 2.0,” The South China Morning Post created a series of NFTs using a new token standard called “ARTIFACT,” which is designed to preserve historical assets on the blockchain. However, it’s important to note that the SCMP is based in Hong Kong. As a result, the paper benefits from higher levels of autonomy as well as the executive, legislative and independent judicial power for which Hong Kong is known.
Hong Kong is no stranger to blockchain technology or minting NFTs. In June this year, pro-Hong Kong activists managed to archive articles from the Hong Kong pro-democracy newspaper onto the blockchain. More than 4,000 Apple Daily articles were uploaded to ARWeave, a popular blockchain storage platform backed by Andreessen Horowitz.

Baidu metaverse app would take 6 years for a full launch, VP says.
Baidu’s metaverse app will not support digital currencies or NFTs despite its focus on digital infrastructure, VP said.
The Chinese internet giant Baidu doesn’t expect to fully launch its XiRang metaverse app soon despite the app’s initial would debut on Monday, according to a senior executive.
Baidu vice president Ma Jie believes that it is still “negative six” years to full XiRang’s launch, CNBC reported on Thursday. He noted that the development of the app started in December 2020.
Ma spoke of “Create 2021,” Baidu’s upcoming annual developers’ event, which the company promotes as the first Chinese conference to be hosted in a metaverse space through XiRang. The app will reportedly handle up to 100,000 virtual members interacting with each other using metaverse avatars at the three-day conference starting on Monday.
The exec noted that Baidu intends to create an open-source platform targeting metaverse developers, providing a building infrastructure in the virtual world.
Despite focusing on digital infrastructure, Baidu's metaverse app will not support digital currencies or trading assets related to virtual property, Ma said. That is despite XiRang using underlying technologies that are similar to blockchain, he added. The plan goes in line with China's renewed ban on cryptocurrencies announced in September 2021.
One of the biggest internet search engine companies in China, Baidu officially joined the metaverse industry by applying for a trademark "metapp" in October 2021. The firm then released its first metaverse app XiRang, translated as the "Land of Hope," with some of the first XiRang's virtual apparently becoming available for users as of early November.
Baidu is not the only company in China to aggressively develop metaverse technology as local giants like Tencent and Alibaba have been working on their metaverse-related projects. In early November, the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, a think tank affiliated with China’s Ministry of State Security, officially warned about national security risks of the Metaverse, citing potential political and social issues.
