Fionn, Taliesin, Balor and the Celtic Rudra(s)

https://taliesinsmap.blogspot.com/2021/05/fionn-taliesin-and-celtic-rudras.html?m=1

As Rudra-Shiva has a destructive and a beneficent side in Vedic religion, we find a similar split between the connected deities Balor of the Evil Eye and Fionn Mac Cumhaill in Irish myth.

While we have shown that Balor parallels the Rudra incarnation Ashwatthama in his myths, we now see that Balor also has a double who is named as one of the primary figures among Fionn’s Fianna warband, showing that he is indeed a Rudra and that the Fianna warband are the Celtic Rudras, as scholars have suspected due to their Mannerbunde lifestyle.

This god type is many things: Mannerbunde god, Wild Hunt god, god of waters of ecstatic inspiration and healing waters as well as of basilisk-like powers of petrifaction and death.

Gårdlösa Fibula

An interesting grave find of a Migration Era woman, the fibula seems much less ornate than many similar finds from the era.

Of note is the proto-Norse runic inscription which states, rather simply, “Ek, unwodz” or “Ek, unwodR” (depending on which nomenclature you prefer). This essentially translates to “I, Unfrenzied” or “I, the Calm”.

It is rather formulaic for Elder Futhark inscriptions to follow this format, starting with Ek (I) and featuring a name. A classic example of this is the inscription found on one of the Golden Horns of Gallehus. What makes this inscription interesting is the “unwodz”, which contains the root of the most famed Germanic God known in modern times as Odin (known in Proto-Germanic as Wodanaz or Woðanaz).

Find rebirth through your children.
Find strength through your gods.

A blessing I wrote in Old English, both in Anglo-Frisian Futhorc and Latin script, and translated in modern English. Some words had to be reconstructed. I recommend these sorts of practices to better connect yourself to our ancestors and their language, as well as to understand the genesis of our modern languages.

Manannan and Agni: the Celtic Sea or Fire god?

https://taliesinsmap.blogspot.com/2021/06/manannan-and-agni.html?m=1

Generally thought of as the “god of the Sea,” Manannan mac Lir turns out to be, in his true identity, the god of Fire known to the Vedics as Agni.

When this is understood, the meanings encoded in the myths of Manannan suddenly become clear and we find that many of the god’s mythic actions even reflect specific details of ancient fire rituals.

Medb, Goddess of Mead and Sovereignty

Medb, queen of Connacht. From the Proto-Celtic *medu-, “mead” or *medua, “intoxicating.” Legendary stand-in for the goddess of mead and sovereignty.

Medb and her cognate, the Indian Madhavi, with derivatives such as madhu, “sweet, honey, mead,” are daughters of the ideal kings Eochaid Feidlech and Yayati, kings who are models of justice, and rulers of a Golden Age.

As Madhavi sacrifices her womb to save her father’s kingdom, in so doing producing four sons who correspond to the three social functions, Medb’s sister Clothru agrees to bear a son by three fathers in order that her family’s line will have heirs, a son who when born is divided into thirds by two red stripes. This son, Lugaid Riab nDerg, then becomes High King of Ireland.

Medb guarantees the permanence or the renewal of the triad of royal virtues defined according to the three functions and provides for the establishment of good kingdoms.

Heimdallr and Apam Napat: The Descendant of the Waters

https://taliesinsmap.blogspot.com/2021/06/heimdallr-and-apam-napat.html

Building on our most recent article showing Manannan and Odinn to be parallels of the fire god, Vedic Agni, this article seeks to dispel a related misconception based on Viktor Rydberg and others, that Norse Heimdallr is the parallel of Agni.

Rydberg uses comparisons with a different deity, Apam Napat, as some of the main pillars of his case. In the Rig Veda, Agni and Apam Napat are conflated into one deity and so their attributes are combined in hymns to Agni. However, in every other branch where these deities can be traced, they appear to be distinct deities, and were likely to be distinct originally, as Vedic and Avestan scholars also have pointed out.

As such, even when using Rydberg's own comparisons, Heimdallr has much more in common with Apam Napat, the Descendant of the Waters, than with the fire god.

Saltfleetby Spindle Whorl

This artifact was discovered on the northern English coast in 2010, and has been loosely dated to 1,000-1,100 C.E.

The spindle whorl is covered in a Younger Futhark runic inscription of a rather controversial nature, as many words are enigmatic and possibly misspelled. It is transliterated as:

oþen · ok · einmtalr · ok : þalfa ' þeir ¶ (') ielba ' þer uolflt ' ok ' kiriuesf

And translated into modern English as:

Óðinn and Heimdallr and Þjálfa, they help you, Úlfljót, and … (last word is unidentified).

The identification of Heimdallr as the written “einmtalr” is hotly debated, and for good reason, however this would be one of the rare mentions of Heimdall outside the Icelandic poetic material. Þjálfa is typically identified as Þjálfi, the servant of the God Thor, mentioned most famously in the story of Utgarda-Loki.

Germanic Religious Law? The Norse underworld was home to a particular realm, known as Náströnd ("Corpse Shore"), which represented an aspect of the underworld ("Hel") in which dwelt adulterers, murderers and those guilty of breaking oaths. The functions of this are described in the Prose & Poetic Eddas:

That hall is woven of serpents’ spines. She saw there wading onerous streams men perjured and wolfish murderers and the one who seduces another’s close-trusted wife.

Völuspá 38 – 39

On Náströnd is a great hall of evil, and its doors face to the north: it is all woven of serpent-backs like a wattle-house; and all the snake-heads turn into the house and blow venom, so that along the hall run rivers of venom; and they who have broken oaths, and murderers, wade those rivers...

Gylfaginning 52

The reservation of what was essentially the darkest corner of hell for certain crimes indicates that these were thought of as the most heinous in ancient Norse society.

Lithuanian Earth Goddess

In Lithuanian, one of the most important goddesses to the Romuva religion is Žemyna, also sometimes referred to as Žemynėla.

Her name is undoubtedly connected to the Lithuanian word “žemė”, meaning earth, from the Proto-Indo-European word *dʰéǵʰōm. Contrast this with the English word “earth”, rooted in the West Germanic *erþu, (perhaps the source of the Germanic Earth Mother “Nerthus”, attested by Tacitus), itself rooted in the the PIE word *h₁er.

In Lithuanian folklore and mythology, Žemyna is the daughter of the the Sun goddess Saulė and the moon god Menulis. Her holiday is known as Žolinės, however in modern times this holiday has been absorbed by the Catholic Church as the cult of the Virgin Mary.

The Irish Parallel of Óðinn on the Windy Tree: The Trial of Fionn at Slieve Cuilinn

https://taliesinsmap.blogspot.com/2021/07/the-irish-parallel-of-oinn-on-windy.html?m=1

Like Apollo, Irish Fionn also has a myth specifically paralleling the famous myth of Óðinn on the tree.

We investigate the mysterious “initiatic” trial of Fionn at the lake on Slieve Cuilinn and the mystical tree from which he gains special powers.
