DLR Magazine 161 – Light as air and versatile (12 July 2019)
German Aerospace Center (DLR)

The cover image showing cornflower-blue spheres is not drawn from the realm of botany. Is it a sponge? The airy pores suggest it. In fact, it comes from the world of high-tech materials It shows an aerogel – light, electrically conductive and thermally stable. These properties are seldom combined in one material …

Scientists Create Millions of Virtual Universes to Understand Cosmic History

Observing the universe through telescopes can provide some clues as to how galaxies came to be, but looking at millions of virtual universes on a supercomputer gave scientists more insight into galaxy formation and the role that dark matter plays in it.
Each of the different universes followed different theories for galaxy formation ...

The Search for Truth in Physics

How close can physics bring us to a truly fundamental understanding of the world?

europeanspaceagency: So that almost happened... 🛰💥🛰
⠀⠀⠀
About a week ago, data from the 18th Space Control Squadron of the US Air Force, who monitor objects orbiting in Earth’s skies, suggested a potential ‘conjunction’ at 11:02 UTC on Monday, 2 September, between our Aeolus satellite and Starlink44 – one of the first 60 satellites recently launched in SpaceX’s mega constellation, planned to be a 12 000 strong fleet by mid-2020.
⠀⠀⠀
Experts in our Space Debris Office worked to calculate the collision probability, combining information on the expected miss distance, conjunction geometry and uncertainties in orbit information.
⠀⠀⠀
As days passed, the probability of collision continued to increase, and by Wednesday 28 August the team decided to reach out to Starlink to discuss their options. Within a day, the Starlink team informed us that they had no plan to take action at this point.

A new theory, based on radar data from NASA's Cassini mission, proposes that some of the lakes on Saturn's largest Moon formed when pockets of nitrogen blew out basins that filled with methane. Click the link to go deeper on these Titan lakes:

NASA: From this perspective, icy moon Tethys appears to be stuck to the A and F rings of planet Saturn! This view from our Cassini spacecraft's narrow-angle camera, taken on July 14, 2014, looks toward the Saturn-facing hemisphere of Tethys. North on Tethys is up and rotated 43 degrees to the right ...
