GRACE gravity mission captures Greenland ice loss

Greenland shed an extraordinary 600 billion tonnes of ice by the end of summer last year.
This melt-driven loss would have raised global sea levels by 2.2mm, say scientists who've just published an analysis of satellite gravity measurements taken over the Arctic.
Of course, when winter set in, some of that mass would have been recovered as it snowed across the ice sheet.
The data comes from the joint US-German space mission known as Grace-FO ...

An unusual ozone hole opened over the Arctic.
.
Using data from @copernicus_eu Sentinel-5p, scientists from @germanaerospacecenter observed an unusual ozone hole form over the #Arctic in the past weeks.
This animation shows the daily ozone levels over the Arctic from 9 March 2020 until 1 April 2020.
.
Unusual atmospheric conditions, including freezing temperatures in the stratosphere, have led ozone levels to plummet – causing a ‘mini-hole’ in the ozone layer.

Happy Earth Day!

Climate change can no longer be denied, partly because of satellite data. In Corona times the motto is #EarthDayAtHome. This also helps against #airpollution: current data from the German Tropomi instrument on board the Sentinel 5P satellite of the European Copernicus fleet show a significant drop in nitrogen concentrations over Europe in March and April 2020 - in some cities 45 - 50 percent less than in the same period last year. Consequence of the isolation measures in connection with Covid-19 to contain the corona virus in Europe.

From NASA Goddard:

Ask our scientists about the Sun’s activity & how it affects Earth in the comments below! ☀️🌎 Our Sun is an active star. It releases a constant stream of material called the solar wind, along with more occasional bursts of particles, material and energy that flow out into the solar system. Here on Earth, the effects of those events can range from issues like satellite problems, communications failures, and even power outages, to stunning natural phenomena like airglow and the northern & southern lights.

Our scientists study the Sun, its effects on Earth, and everything in between to better understand when and how these events happen. Ask us anything about our research in the comments!

⬇️ We will answer your questions from 3-5 p.m. EDT on May 1

In an area stretching from Africa to South America, Earth’s magnetic field is gradually weakening. This strange behaviour has geophysicists puzzled and is causing technical disturbances in satellites orbiting Earth. Scientists are using data from ESA’s Swarm constellation to improve our understanding of this area known as the ‘South Atlantic Anomaly.’

ESA to reveal first images from Solar Orbiter

The first images from ESA’s new Sun-observing spacecraft Solar Orbiter will be released to the public on 16 July 2020 ...
...
No other images of the Sun have been taken from such a close distance. During its first perihelion, the point in the spacecraft’s elliptical orbit closest to the Sun, Solar Orbiter got as close as 77 million kilometres from the star’s surface, about half the distance between the Sun and Earth. The spacecraft will eventually make much closer approaches to the Sun ...

Cluster’s 20 years of studying Earth’s magnetosphere

Despite a nominal lifetime of two years, ESA’s Cluster is now entering its third decade in space. This unique four-spacecraft mission has been revealing the secrets of Earth’s magnetic environment since 2000 and, with 20 years of observations under its belt, is still enabling new discoveries as it explores our planet’s relationship with the Sun

The return of the LIDAR
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a peninsula far, far away, a laser shoots into the sky to study the Antarctic atmosphere at Concordia research station.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Light Detection and Ranging instrument, or LIDAR, is a remote sensing technique that uses light to study an object.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A pulsed laser beam is aimed at the target and properties of the resulting scattered light are recorded by sensors. Using these measurements, researchers collect information about the atmosphere, including density, temperature, wind speed, cloud formation and aerosol particles.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
LIDAR and SONAR (sonic detection and ranging) instruments help monitor the Atmospheric Boundary Layer, the 1 km thick bottom layer of the troposphere where changes on Earth’s surface strongly influence temperature, moisture and wind.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These changes to Earth’s surface are largely caused by human activity. Increased greenhouse gas emissions are raising temperatures and ...
